2024 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List No. 11

Who is the 11th-best prospect on the Giants farm?

We’ve still got a long ways to go in our 2024 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List, in which we’ll rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization. But after the latest chapter we’ve hit a fun milestone: we have a top 10. And rounding out that top 10 is right-handed pitcher Mason Black, who slides up one spot from his ranking in last year’s CPL.

Black, who turned 24 a month ago, was the team’s third-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. His 2023 season was a highly successful one, and he ended it knocking on the door of the Majors. The 6’3 pitcher kicked off the year with AA Richmond, where he posted a 3.57 ERA and a 3.23 FIP in 16 starts before getting promoted to AAA Sacramento. In 13 starts with the River Cats, Black had a 3.86 ERA and a 5.33 FIP. Across the two levels, Black struck out 155 batters and walked 52 in 123.2 innings. That made him as close to a true starter as the Giants used last year in the Minors, as he trailed only Kai-Wei Teng in innings pitched.

It will be fun to see what Black does in 2024, and what the Giants do with him. If he pitches well in Sacramento will he be given an opportunity to join the San Francisco rotation? Will he be used in a hybrid role like Tristan Beck and Sean Hjelle? We will hopefully soon find out!

Black was also on friend of the site Roger Munter’s There R Giants podcast on Tuesday, which I highly recommend giving a listen to.

Now onward we march, and we have some new names to vote on!
