Happy Monday, San Francisco Giants fans.
Today is an exciting day in the baseball world: it’s the start of the 2023 MLB Winter Meetings. The offseason has been underway for a while now, but it’s been quiet for nearly everyone, as it usually is in November. A few big names — Aaron Nola and Sonny Gray, most notably — have signed contracts in free agency, and there was even an interesting trade on Sunday, but now is where things really heat up.
Many of the largest free agents will sign this week, with lots of people around the league predicting that Shohei Ohtani will choose his new team before the week concludes. That could have a domino effect that leads to many other top players signing ... perhaps even right-handed pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto who, thankfully, is being connected to the Giants a fair bit.
I’m hearing an awful lot of buzz on the Giants and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Some other teams in the hunt for him think the Giants might have an edge.— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) December 3, 2023
Trades will also take place, and there’s a very strong chance that Juna Soto has a new employer by the weekend. And along the way, the Giants will have a chance to add or lose players in Wednesday’s Rule 5 Draft, after protecting pitchers Erik Miller, Kai-Wei Teng, and Trevor McDonald a few weeks ago.
Over the next few days the Giants will likely sign players, and you’ll likely see news that excites you and hear reports that disappoint you. You’ll end the week with a better feel for what the 2024 roster will look like, for better or for worse.
Buckle up, folks. Now’s where the fun begins.
