Greg Johnson is not the kind of man who cares that much about winning the World Series. He wants to make money, and handing out big contracts does not make economic sense to him.
Farhan Zaidi does have the ability to find players who will play above what is expected but he has never signed a big free agent batter for the Giants. He will do a good job with what he has, but let us look at the facts, despite his insisting that he is willing to sign a top notch free agent, the fact is that Greg Johnson let the Cubs get Seiya Suzuki for only a 85 million dollar contract.
Charles Johnson was not that involved when he was the chairman of the board in running the team, but his son Greg is, and he is not like Mark Walter.
Walter wants the Dodgers to win, and is willing to spend money to do it. Greg Johnson is more concern about profit, and will keep Zaidi under tight financial constraints. If the Zaidi happens to pull off a World Series win, then for Greg Johnson this is a great bonus, but it is not the goal.
Since the Giants last World Series victory the worth of the team has gone up from 1 billion to 3 billion dollars. The team is making lots of money but this is not reflected in the line up. There is a reason the team is so profitable, cheap labor.
Good luck Mr. Zaidi, you are great at finding diamonds in the rough, but I doubt if they are bright enough to out shine an ownership group that wants to win.
