The San Francisco Giants take on the San Diego Padres again tonight. Get used to reading that sentence because there are still seven more games against them this season after tonight.
Opening for the Giants will be Dominic Leone, who enters tonight’s game with a 1.41 ERA, 3.32 FIP, with 41 strikeouts to 20 walks in 44.2 innings pitched. The Giants have been favoring Leone to play the role of the opener in bullpen games lately, to much success. He’s “started” three games, most recently on Monday, and has had five scoreless innings to show for it, only allowing one hit.
Taking the mound for the Padres will be Joe Musgrove, who enters tonight’s game with a 2.93 ERA, 3.52 FIP, with 180 strikeouts to 45 walks in 159 innings pitched. Musgrove’s last start was against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Friday, where he allowed four hits, three runs, and five walks, striking out seven in six innings of work.
Musgrove last faced the Giants twice in May, and it did not go well from him. He allowed home runs to both Brandons, averaging about 4.5 runs in each of those starts for losses. On the other side, I would expect to see Eric Hosmer early in the lineup, since he has a .750 average against Leone (though only in four at bats) and probably Fernando Tatis, Jr., who hit a home run off of him in June of 2019 when Leone was with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Mike Yastrzemski was scratched tonight with a bruised elbow. Steven Duggar will start in his place.
