The San Francisco Giants made it three straight pitchers to open up the 2021 MLB Draft. With their third-round pick — No. 85 overall — the Giants selected right-handed pitcher Mason Black out of Lehigh University.
That follows Mississippi State RHP Will Bednar in the first round, and Fordham LHP Mike Mikulski in the second round. Will the Giants select 20 college arms this draft? Stay tuned to find out.
Black is 21.6 years old, and listed at 6’3”, 230 pounds. He can touch triple digits with his fastball, but lacks a little in command and is still learning to utilize secondary pitches. It seems likely that he’ll be headed for the bullpen, where that high velocity can play a little better.
Last year at Lehigh, Black had a 3.11 ERA and 1.313 WHIP, with 95 strikeouts to 31 walks in 72.1 innings. The Giants probably liked what they saw from Black in the Cape Cod League in 2019, when he had a 1.47 ERA and 1.064 WHIP, with 39 strikeouts to 12 walks in 36.2 innings.
