Friday BP: More mock drafts

Who will the Giants select on July 11?

Hello and happy Friday.

We’re only a few weeks away from the 2021 MLB Draft, which runs from July 11 through July 13. As we get closer to the date, mock drafts will start flying, as intel starts leaking and team’s preferences become more and more clear.

But until then, let’s check in on where things stand for the San Francisco Giants on some recent mock drafts.

Over at Fangraphs, Eric Longenhagen and Kevin Goldstein project the Giants (who have the No. 14 pick) to take Texas RHP Ty Madden. Goldstein describes Madden as a player who “looks like a top 10 pick one Friday and then a back of the first-round type the next.” That’s the type of player I would be pretty comfortable with the Giants drafting and handing over to their developmental staff. I’m generally high ceiling over high floor with drafts, but I’m doubly so with this Giants coaching staff.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel mocks a high schooler to the Giants: center fielder Will Taylor out of Dutch Fork High School in South Carolina. Funnily enough, Taylor is already the second player I’ve seen mocked to the Giants who is committed to Clemson University for both baseball and football, where he’s a slot receiver.

McDaniel notes that Taylor will be hard to sign, as he plans to early enroll at Clemson, and points to some rumors that he already has a number in mind for what it would take to sign him. If the Giants are willing to match that number, they could potentially take advantage of a player who would have gone higher on talent alone.

Finally, Jim Callis at MLB Pipeline has the Giants selecting Sam Houston State outfielder Colton Cowser. That would make it three college bats in as many years for Farhan Zaidi since taking over as president of baseball operations.
