The San Francisco Giants made a few moves on Tuesday, ahead of their two-game series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. Most notable is the move at backup catcher, where Curt Casali has been placed on the 10-day Injured List with a wrist strain, and Chadwick Tromp has been recalled from AAA Sacramento.

San Francisco also made a bullpen move, optioning right-handed pitcher Nick Tropeano, and calling up fellow righty Dominic Leone from Sacramento. To make room for Leone on the 40-man roster, recently-claimed right-handed pitcher Sam Delaplane was moved to the 60-day IL.

Tromp returns to the roster for the first time this year after being a success story in 2020. The righty appeared in 24 games in the truncated season — his first at the big league level — and hit .213/.219/.426, with 4 home runs. Not exactly an All-Star performance, but given that he wasn’t on any Giants fans radar entering Summer Camp, and that Joey Bart was struggling mightily, it was a solid performance, especially when you factor in his defense and framing.

In 63 AAA plate appearances this year Tromp is hitting .218/.317/.382, with 8 walks to 16 strikeouts.

For those wondering why Tromp, rather than Bart — who is sporting a 1.095 OPS in Sacramento — got the call up, the reason is simple: the Giants are still prioritizing Bart’s development.

On the pitching side of things, Leone has been spectacular in Sacramento, where he’s allowed just 6 hits, 3 walks, and 1 earned run in 9 innings, while striking out 16. Assuming he makes it onto the field with the Giants, it will be his eighth MLB season.

Last but not least on the injury front, Evan Longoria will not be hitting the IL after leaving Monday’s game. His MRI resulted in good news, and the Giants anticipate him returning on Thursday or Friday (Wednesday is an off day).
