Sunday BP: The All-Star Game is set for Georgia, but hopefully that can change

Amid recent voter suppression laws, the MLBPA would like to speak with the league about moving the All-Star Game.

Hello and happy Sunday.

After a coronavirus-induced hiatus in 2020, the MLB All-Star Game is set to return in 2021, and I, for one, am excited to see Mike Yastrzemski rep the San Francisco Giants in the game (please make the team, Yaz). Yet while we know that the game will happen, we’re not entirely sure where.

The game is set to take place at Truist Park in Cumberland, Georgia, home of the Atlanta Braves. But, as you’re probably aware if you read the news, Georgia has recently enacted voter-suppression laws that are as racist as they are undemocratic.

And now it’s not clear if the game will take place in the state.

According to a report from The Boston Globe, MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark has said that the union would like to speak to the league about the game. Clark told the Globe that “we have not had a conversation with the league on that issue. If there is an opportunity to, we would look forward to having that conversation.”

Shortly after Clark’s statement, Los Angeles Dodgers manager (and former Giant) Dave Roberts said that he would consider not participating in the game, if he were set to manage.

MLB is not exactly a league known for taking a stance on these types of things, so seeing some pushback from the players would be nice.
