2021 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List No. 34

Who is the 34th-best prospect in the Giants farm?

We’re at the point in ranking San Francisco Giants prospects where “what is the likelihood that this player will ever actually make the Major Leagues?” becomes a pretty critical question. And so it was perhaps with that in mind that the McCovey Chronicles community voted outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe as the Giants No. 33 prospect in the 2021 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List.

In a field full of names that are still a long ways away from the big show — and surely with a few names that won’t ever get there — the community leaned towards Basabe, who made his MLB debut in 2020.

The Giants acquired Basabe during the season, played him a little, and designated him for assignment this offseason to make room for some signings. But he cleared waivers and was outrighted to AAA Sacramento, and I don’t think anyone would be even remotely surprised to see him manning the grass at Oracle Park at some point this season.

Now let’s see who is No. 34.
