Luis Alexander Basabe is staying in the San Francisco Giants system. After clearing waivers, the 24-year old, switch-hitting outfielder was outrighted to AAA, where he’ll join the Sacramento River Cats.

Basabe was recently designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for free agent signing Tommy La Stella. He was right on the fringe where no one seemed sure if he would clear waivers, so the Giants must be happy that he did.
It’s just the latest in Basabe’s flurry of recent transactions with the Giants. San Francisco traded cash to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Basabe on Aug. 9, and sent him straight to the Alternate Training Site. He was later recalled, then optioned, then recalled a second time, then placed on the Injured List. Add in he recent DFA’ing and the outrighting, and Basabe is probably getting fairly used to seeing Farhan Zaidi’s name on his iPhone.
Basabe hit 2-14 with 4 walks to 5 strikeouts in 2020, his debut MLB season. He’ll provide decent depth in Sacramento, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him back on the active roster sometime this year.
