Good morning, baseball fans!
The season may be over for the San Francisco Giants, but the awards are starting to roll in. As we’ve announced earlier this week, multiple Giants players are up for Silver Slugger and Golden Glove awards. And yesterday, it was announced that three members of the Giants organization won 2021 Sporting News MLB awards, which are voted on by players, managers and executives.
First up, Buster Posey won the National League Comeback Player of the Year award. Posey came back from not playing in the 2020 season to have a resurgent season and lead the Giants to their exceptional 107 win season. And while he may not have had the best numbers on the team all around, he was worth 4.9 fWAR and his fellow National League players voted for him well ahead of the next highest vote-getter.
Second, Gabe Kapler won National League Manager of the Year. And it wasn’t even close. 86% of his fellow National League managers voted for him, and it’s not hard to see why. A team that wasn’t expected to do much this season ended up winning 107 games and it’s hard to vote for anyone but the manager that helped make that happen.
And finally, on that same note, Farhan Zaidi won the MLB-wide Executive of the Year, for pretty much the same reasons. The decisions he made and the team and coaching staff he assembled helped shatter expectations for this club and set the tone for a new era of Giants baseball. It’s hard to argue with results and his fellow MLB executives couldn’t, he garnered 56% of the vote.
