The San Francisco Giants season is, sadly, over. I’m sorry for bringing this up; trust me when I say I don’t like it any more than you do.
With the season over, you might pivot to the ongoing NFL season, or perhaps the starting up NBA season (as well as the final game or two of the WNBA Finals). Maybe you’re going to get into a new sport (I recommend Formula 1, personally), or perhaps it’s time for a sports sabbatical; a competitive hibernation that you’ll wake up from sometime in late February as the Giants are making their way to Scottsdale.
Or maybe you’re sticking with baseball. Beautiful, awful, Giants-less baseball.
If so, you have to choose between four remaining teams: the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Dodgers. The way I see it, there are three clear reasons to root for each of those teams, except for the last one. Let’s lay out the reasoning.
Houston Astros
First reason to root for them: The Astros are managed by Dusty Baker. Baker who played one season for the Giants and managed them for 10. Baker who is in his 24th season as an MLB manager and is still looking for his season to end in celebration for the first time. Good dude.
Second reason to root for them: Nothing would make Dodgers fans angrier than the Astros winning the World Series. Many of them would have preferred if the Giants won.
Third reason to root for them: If the Astros win the World Series then the Dodgers did not win the World Series.
Boston Red Sox
First reason to root for them: The Red Sox are the worst team left in the playoffs, so if the best team this season (the Giants) couldn’t win it all, let’s go in the opposite direction I say.
Second reason to root for them: Of the remaining teams, the Giants have far less beef and history with the Red Sox than the other three.
Third reason to root for them: If the Red Sox win the World Series then the Dodgers did not win the World Series.
Atlanta Braves
First reason to root for them: They’re playing the Dodgers right now, so you are already a fan.
Second reason to root for them: The Braves have four former Giants — Ehire Adrianza, Adam Duvall, Will Smith, and Drew Smyly — on their NLCS roster.
Third reason to root for them: If the Braves win the World Series then the Dodgers did not win the World Series.
Los Angeles Dodgers
No.
