Hello and happy Friday.
On Thursday, the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in exciting fashion, lowering their magic number to two. Now they enter the final weekend of the regular season, and they do so with a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Giants host the San Diego Padres, while the Dodgers host the Milwaukee Brewers; neither of those two teams have anything left to play for in the regular season.
The Giants also hold the tiebreaker, which doesn’t mean they win the division if the team’s finish with identical records. It just means that they’d host a one-game tiebreaker, with the winner taking the division, and the loser heading to the single-elimination Wild Card game.
Here are the scenarios:
- If the Giants sweep the Padres 3-0, then they win the NL West.
- If the Giants beat the Padres 2-1, then they win the NL West.
- If the Giants lose to the Padres 2-1, and the Dodgers sweep the Brewers 3-0, then the Giants and Dodgers play a tiebreaker game. The Dodgers have no way to win the division without playing Game No. 163.
- If the Giants get swept by the Padres 3-0, and the Dodgers sweep the Brewers 3-0, the Dodgers win the division outright. If the Dodgers beat the Brewers 2-1, the Giants and Dodgers will play a tiebreaker at Oracle Park.
The job is not yet done. But my goodness the Giants are in a lovely position.
