Giants fans are a realistic bunch

They’re not particularly confident in the team’s lineup or rotation.

MLB: San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across MLB. Each week, we send out questions to the most plugged in Giants fans, and fans across the country. Sign up here to join Reacts.

The San Francisco Giants are off to a pretty decent start, when you consider that they’ve won 40% of their first five games, despite 80% of those games being on the road and 100% of them being against very good baseball teams.

But they’re off to a pretty bad start in terms of actually playing quality baseball. They haven’t looked good, primarily because the baseball they’re playing is not good. Funny how that works.

In last week’s SB Nation Reacts survey fans were asked to take a deeper look at the team. They voted separately on the pitching staff, lineup and coaching staff/front office. Giants fans were realistic, which is to say pessimistic.

Pitching Staff

I would love to meet the 27% of Giants fans who expressed confidence in the pitching staff. In their defense, the question is about whether you’re confident in the staff, not whether you’re confident that the staff is good.

Perhaps those who answered “yes” were really trying to say that they’re confident that the Giants pitching staff exists. Or maybe they’re confident that the Giants pitching staff is bad.

I can’t argue with that confidence.

Lineup

All I can say is that if more than 20% of Giants fans had expressed confidence in the lineup, then I would have had to tender my resignation, because I would have failed you all in properly setting a doomsday tone.

Coaching Staff & General Manager

Finally some confidence emerges! And this confidence can be warranted. The jury is still out on Farhan Zaidi, Scott Harris, and Gabe Kapler, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic in that regard.

Fans were also asked how they felt about the 2020 season as a whole, with 69% of fans saying this season is still meaningful. Nice.
