Third time’s the charm, right?
After two games, the San Francisco Giants could not look worse. They’re 0-2, and have been outscored 17-2 by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But every game starts with a fresh scoreboard, so maybe a win is waiting today. Or maybe not. We’ll find out.
Game #3
Who: San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
When: 1:10 p.m. PT
Regional broadcast: None
National broadcast: Fox (available on fuboTV)
Radio: KNBR 680 AM/104.5 FM
Lineups
The Giants are facing their first left-handed starting pitcher of the year, so we get to see some faces we haven’t seen yet, and the Giants are opting to put eight right-handed batters in the lineup.
They could put nine, but that would require putting Donovan Solano at shortstop, and Mauricio Dubón in center field, and that’s perhaps not a defensive gamble they want to make, especially given how well Mike Yastrzemski hit lefties a year ago.
So here’s Gabe Kapler’s lineup, with last year’s stats (this year’s performance, when applicable, in parenthesis).
- LF — Austin Slater (R) — .238/.333/.417, 100 wRC+
- 3B — Donovan Solano (R) — .330/.360/.456, 116 wRC+ (0-1)
- 2B — Wilmer Flores (R) — .317/.361/.487, 120 wRC+ (3-8)
- 1B — Darin Ruf (R) — N/A
- DH — Hunter Pence (R) — .297/.358/.552, 128 wRC+ (0-4)
- CF — Mike Yastrzemski (L) — .272/.334/.518, 121 wRC+ (2-7)
- RF — Jaylin Davis (R) — .167/.255/.238, 39 wRC+ (47 PAs) (1-3)
- SS — Mauricio Dubón (R) — .274/.306/.434, 95 wRC+ (0-6)
- C — Tyler Heineman (S) — .273/.273/.636 (12 PAs) (2-3)
RHP — Logan Webb — 5.22 ERA, 4.12 FIP, 37 Ks and 14 BBs in 39.2 IP

Notes
Gamesmanship: Kapler has been releasing his lineup a lot later than Roberts, and the Dodgers’ skipper chalks that up to gamesmanship.
Dave Roberts on the Giants revealing their starting pitchers late

“It’s a little bit of gamesmanship, we’ll call it. To each, their own."
Trouble in paradise: Despite what it may look like, the season has not gone perfectly for the Giants. Kevin Gausman — who pitched in relief in Friday’s loss — doesn’t seem happy about the non-traditional approach that the team is taking to pitcher use.
Kevin Gausman said it was hard to find a routine with the Giants' unconventional pitching plans. "I think that there should be starters and there should be relievers." He implied that this is a one-series ploy to get an edge and it'll be more conventional going forward.

Enjoy the game, everyone. If that’s possible.
