Another white van adventure

Inside the dark bar called Eureka! Evan, Lyle, and Roger find Gallo at the bar. Several games of sport are on several large screens on the wall.

"Why are we here?"

"Not to discuss Will and Idea."

"But you told us we would!"

"I lied. We are here to consider how we know what we know."

"I know it because I see it."

"I know it because I feel it."

"I know it because I think about it."

"Then look at the screens and think about where they come from. Imagine that instead of a dark bar you are in a cave, and that the cave is your life. You are obliged to watch these images, for they are also your life."

"I don’t believe it."

"Don’t you believe that there are people who create these images, these puppets? This flickering show is your reality and you perceive it as such, not as a show."

"Give me the keys, Roger."

"If you were freed from the van and the dark bar, you would be forced to look at light in its full glory, you would be resentful at first. You would squint and cower. You would wish for the shadows and the mirages to come back. You would miss the comfort of that world."

"I’m leaving."

"But slowly, a new reality would post, then color would emerge, then depth, and soon you could look at the sun itself, though indirectly. You will have understood."

The white van starts and heads south to Bakersfield, on 99. It’s the best way to get there.

"I’ve been reading about things," says Evan as he drives the van south.

"I’ve been seeing lots of things," says Roger.

"I’ve heard some things," says Lyle, the perceptive one.

There is no question that something happened.
