Wishing you all a safe, healthy, and loving day. Preferably with good food.

Hello and happy Thanksgiving, Turkey Day, Tofurkey Day, or Thursday. Your choice. You can choose multiple options, or none at all.

I wasn’t sure what photo choice to use for a San Francisco Giants article about Thanksgiving, so I just chose one of Tim Lincecum smiling, because that feels like a very good default option.

Thanksgiving is always a weird holiday to me. On the one hand, it has horrific, genocidal origins. On the other hand, the purpose of the holiday is to gather with the people you love most, be thankful for the existence of said people, and eat.

These things aren’t mutually exclusive, but they are on opposite ends of the “things you should do” spectrum.

This year the holiday is much weirder than usual, on account of the coronavirus pandemic. I won’t be with my family — excluding the one member of it that I live with — and I suspect that is the case for many of you as well. I’m not particularly fond of the holiday itself, but the older I get the more I realize that it operates as a set date to be with my people, and I love that. You can’t postpone it, push it back a week, or say you’ll get around to it eventually.

Except this year, of course.

Anyway, I hope it’s a good day for you. I hope you’re able to stay healthy and safe, as are your people. I hope you can responsibly be with someone(s) you love, and that you eat well.

I’m thankful for this community. The friends I’ve made, the debates I’ve had, the support I’ve received, the things I’ve learned, the ideas I’ve had challenged, and the job opportunities that have come out of it are all incredibly meaningful to me, and I’m reminded of that daily. So thank you.
