Hello and happy Saturday.
The San Francisco Giants were quiet on Friday, but there was still MLB news to celebrate. The Miami Marlins hired Kim Ng to be their next General Manager. She becomes the first woman to be an MLB GM, the first Asian-American to be an MLB GM, and is believed to be the first woman to hold that position for any major professional men’s sports team in North America.
You might recall that the Giants were interested in Ng two years ago when they were looking for a president of baseball operations, before ultimately hiring Farhan Zaidi instead.
Ng’s achievement is monumental, though any story about it needs to include just how overdue it is. It’s overdue to have a woman as an MLB GM. It’s overdue to have an Asian-American as an MLB GM. And it’s overdue to have Ng, specifically, as a GM. Or as McCovey Chronicles alumnus Jen Ramos put it:
it's fantastic that Kim Ng is finally now a GM and honestly as an Asian femme, this is so cool to see.— Jen Ramos ️ ♿ (@jenmacramos) November 13, 2020
but it also shouldn't be forgotten that she has been interviewing for GM job for YEARS and only just got one NOW despite being more than qualified and competent for a GM job.
Here’s hoping the Marlins give Ng the resources necessary to excel at the position. Huge congrats to her on an incredibly well-deserved and overdue achievement.
