Good morning, McCoven.
This isn’t technically Giants related, but it affects the overall baseball community and many of the current Giants players and their families have been donating and sharing information about this story.
Earlier this week, the lives of Blake Bivens’ wife Emily, their young son Cullen, and Emily’s mother were lost to murder. The suspect is in custody and is believed to be Emily’s brother. I’m not going to get into the details, the point of this isn’t the crime, it is the recovery effort.
Bivens is a pitching prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays system. He was a devoted husband and father, coaches and teammates describe him as mature beyond his years. Having a young family will do that. So it is unfathomable how one begins to process such a devastating loss.
The financial situation for most minor league players is...not great, to put it mildly. If you would like to donate to the Emily Bivens Family Fund, you can do so here. All funds will go to Blake to help with expenses.
The staff and community of McCovey Chronicles extend our deepest sympathies to Bivens and the entire Tampa Bay Rays organization and fanbase during this time of grieving.
