Logan Webb becomes “the fourth-youngest Giants starter of the last two decades” and the youngest starter to debut since Madison Bumgarner. To make room for him, the Giants optioned Joey Rickard to Triple-A and will opt to go with 14 pitchers (!) at least for tonight.
Speculation-wise, it’s possible that someone could hit the IL within the next couple of days in order to bring Rickard back quickly. Alternatively, we might be on the verge of a Mauricio Dubon call-up (he’s already on the 40-man roster) unless there are designs on getting Jaylin Davis into the lineup before September. He still needs to be added to the 40-man roster.
The Giants still need to win these games to make all the roster churn less important, though. They’re three games back of a Wild Card spot, and the competition can be down to five other teams if they can put Arizona sufficiently in the rear view this weekend.

It might be a little bit easier for Logan Webb and the Giants tonight after Ketel Marte was taken out of the lineup due to back tightness. A reminder, again, that he has been the fifth-most valuable player in baseball this season.

Mike Yastrzemski might not have another 3-homer game in him, but it’s worth pointing out:
