Johnny Cueto has been inching his way back from Tommy John surgery for the last year and change. He was on schedule to return after a couple more rehab starts, presumably to return at some point in September. However, there has been talk lately that the Giants might be trying to rush him back sooner in order for him to be able to contribute to the hunt for a Wild Card spot.
Personally, and I don’t think I’m alone in this, I don’t know if that’s a good idea. I’m all for the Giants doing what they can to try to be competitive now, don’t get me wrong. But not when it could potentially come at the expense of a player’s recovery.
Cueto was scheduled to throw 55-60 pitches in his next rehab start, which doesn’t really seem to back the organization’s opinion that he’s “just about at 100%.” I would hope, then, that they are taking more factors into consideration than just a desire to have a stronger rotation down the stretch.
On an unrelated personal note, my parents’ sweet puppy Timmy (named after our Timmy) had to have emergency surgery last night. I don’t want to bore you with a long thing about it, but if you can help, it would mean a lot.
