WE DID IT!

It’s not that Hunter Pence is having a good year, it’s that he’s having a great year. He already has 15 home runs, which puts him two away from equaling his output from 2017 and 2018 combined. His 141 wRC+ is a career high, and ties him for 21st in baseball along with Rhys Hoskins and the DiamondbacksKetel Marte, who makes his first All-Star Game this year:

Marte’s emergence as a bona fide superstar is as surprising as Hunter Pence having a great year at the age of 36. His 20 home runs through 78 games is just two off his career home run totals from all previous seasons combined (22).

He got hurt last week against the Giants and finally had a pinch hit appearance in last night’s game to show that he’s on the mend. His presence in the lineup is an important one for him and the Diamondbacks.

RF — Adam Jones
CF — Jarrod Dyson
2B — Ketel Marte
LF — David Peralta
1B — Christian Walker
3B — Jake Lamb
SS — Nick Ahmed
C — Carson Kelly
SP — Alex Young

The Diamondbacks had to give up some talent — Mitch Haniger, Jean Segura, and Zac Curtis — to get Marte, but he wasn’t the headline of that deal: it was Taijuan Walker. It’s the sort of move much like the A’s Khris Davis deal that the Giants haven’t made in years, if ever: trading potential talent for potential talent and seeing if it can be actualized on their major league roster instead of another team’s.

For now, we’ve got this:

2B — Donovan Solano
1B — Brandon Belt
LF — Tyler Austin
C — Buster Posey
3B — Evan Longoria
CF — Kevin Pillar
SS — Brandon Crawford
RF — Mike Yastrzemski
SP — Tyler Beede

Brandon Belt gets “demoted” out of the leadoff spot only because tonight’s starter, Alex Young, is left-handed.

Beede didn’t look too great against the Diamondbacks in his last start (4 ER in 4 IP) and I can’t help but wonder if working with Buster Posey had something to do with it. They’re teaming up again tonight, so, that’s what I’ll be focusing on.
