Samardzija (3-6, 4.71 FIP) vs. Clarke (1-2, 5.28 FIP)

MLB: Atlanta Braves at Arizona Diamondbacks Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants are 3-4 so far in this stretch of 21 straight games and after having their DNA unraveled for 27 innings by the Dodgers, they now get to face a hungry Diamondbacks team that’s on a four game losing streak and have lost six of nine.

In case you missed it:

  • Steven Duggar was placed on the IL due to back tightness. The move was retroactive to Wednesday, so he’ll be eligible on the 30th.
  • Alex Dickerson was called up from Triple-A to Duggar’s place. He’s batting seventh tonight.
  • Joey Rickard, another 28-year old outfielder and another Orioles castoff, was claimed off waivers and optioned to Triple-A to take Dickerson’s place. Nick Vincent was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster.

This Diamondbacks lineup has a career .224 (15-for-67) batting average against Samardzija, for what it’s worth:

CF — Jarrod Dyson
2B — Ketel Marte
LF — David Peralta
RF — Adam Jones
3B — Eduardo Escobar
1B — Christian Walker
SS — Nick Ahmed
C — Carson Kelly
SP — Taylor Clarke

Alex Dickerson had a .788 OPS with San Diego in 84 games back in 2016 then missed all of 2017 because of Tommy John surgery. The 29-year old left fielder had a 1.060 OPS in Triple-A El Paso before the Padres DFA’d him a few weeks ago, but hit .176/.263/.176 (.439) with Sacramento. Maybe players just don’t like being in the Giants organization at any level?

2B — Joe Panik
RF — Mike Yastrzemski
3B — Pablo Sandoval
1B — Brandon Belt
C — Stephen Vogt
CF — Kevin Pillar
LF — Alex Dickerson
SS — Brandon Crawford
SP — Jeff Samardzija

Dickerson is supposed to have decent strike zone judgment. Unrelated, but related: he has 44 career plate appearances against the Diamondbacks (his most against any other team) and a .316/.409/.553 line. Last night, the matchup data against Madison Bumgarner really setup just how much he was gonna get thumped. Maybe Dickerson can have a big night, too. Of course, matchup numbers are pretty meaningless, but what else have we got?
