Full disclosure, I did not watch yesterday’s game. I followed along via Twitter in between taking well deserved naps while the weather is still cool enough here for me to be able to do that in the afternoon.
So I was surprised by two things in the eighth inning. The first was that Nick Vincent is on the team. I know, I know, I call myself a Giants fan. But still, I had yet to hear his name or see him pitch in a game. Just odd timing on my part, I suppose. The second was Vincent’s decision to throw to Evan Longoria mid-pitch, allowing a third run for the Rays via a balk.
I don’t think anyone was more surprised than Evan Longoria, though. Naturally, I can’t embed the full video because MLB is weird. But our old friend Carmen Kiew got a pretty great GIF that shows that at least Longoria had a good sense of humor about the whole thing:

Speaking of moods, the Padres are back in town which is kind of a mood killer. It feels like we just saw the Padres, which is true in this case, but it kind of always feels like we just saw the Padres and then we’re seeing them again two days later at every point in the season. It used to just be kind of annoying, but now that they are actually good, it’s even more so.
I miss the days where, as poorly as the Giants were performing, we always had the old standby of “Well, at least they’re doing better than the Padres” to console our fourth place souls. I have a feeling that will not be the case this year.
