Sometimes, you just can’t manage to watch a game or keep up with it on social media. Last night was one of those times for me. I got home and found the following waiting for me on my timeline. Let’s discuss.
1. The last gasp at selling nostalgia, aka this Giants commercial:
We built this city

Honestly, I take more exception with the concept than the execution. I’m a sucker for nostalgia, especially of the Giants variety. So I don’t mind being pandered to with a good highlight reel from time to time. But the song choice and performance left a lot to be desired. Not to mention the fact that San Francisco was around for quite a while before the Giants arrived, so “We Built This City” as a sentiment doesn’t really work for me, but it DOES remind me of this excellent tweet:
MAYOR: WTF half our buildings just sank several feet and then collapsed and millions are homeless. How could this have happened???

STARSHIP: we did warn you about what we built this city on
2. Brandon Belt is in mid-May form with his bat drops:

After seeing this, I hurriedly opened the At-Bat app and briefly forgot how to read a box score and thought he’d hit three home runs! This was, of course, not the case. But he did have one heck of a night, getting within a triple of the cycle before meeting the business end of a curveball. Hank Schulman thinks it was a conspiracy, and I’m just salty enough to go with it:
Oliver Perez PURPOSELY drilled Brandon Belt with a curveball to keep him from hitting that triple or a cycle. #SFGiants

3. I was feeling pretty hyped about Belt, and then this happened:
Brandon Belt walked up to me the day before photo day and asked if it was noticeable that he had cut off half his eyebrow. He told the full story on the broadcast: pic.twitter.com/7PvS8gtL0I

When the spotlight is on Brandon Belt, he never ceases to entertain. You have to give him that much.
