The Giants solidified their backup catcher situation by signing Rene Rivera to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Straight from MLB Trade Rumors:
While the veteran Rivera has a bit of pop in his bat (.147 ISO over the past five seasons), he’s known more for his glove than for his bat. Rivera boasts an outstanding 37 percent caught-stealing rate for his career and has routinely drawn excellent framing numbers from Baseball Prospectus.
Or they just added a guy who might surprise.
We’re now at the earliest point of Baseball in the season, if you count Fan Fest, which I am for this purpose. Players in uniforms! Commercials being shot! And there even still rumors of Bryce Harper being added...
We’re peaking on hope right now, and that’s a very good thing. PECOTA just revised their projections from yesterday, taking into account the Phillies’ trade for JT Realmuto. The Giants lost a win in these projected standings to 71-91. But it doesn’t matter this week, right before pitchers and catchers report.
What are your most optimistic takes for the Giants this season?
