Late Tuesday night, shortly after it was announced that Gerrit Cole was signing with the New York Yankees, a rumor started circulating that the Dodgers (who took the Giants’ usual place of “also-ran” in the quest for Cole) would be shifting their focus to pursuing Madison Bumgarner.
For me, I think my visceral negative reaction was more of an instinctive reaction to the Dodgers, also the Dodgers getting any player, but most especially the Dodgers getting a former Giants player. But ultimately it’s not the end of the world if he signs there. I wouldn’t fault him if they offered him the best contract. Nor do I think other fans should either, because in all likelihood it wouldn’t be a choice of the Dodgers over the Giants. Despite saying that he would prefer to stay in San Francisco, the feeling doesn’t seem to be mutual and Bumgarner does not seem to be a top priority for the new Giants front office.
That said, there are 28 other teams. One of them has got to be able to come up with a better offer than L.A., dang it.
