An update from Johnny Cueto

We all know that the Johnny Cueto news was about as bad as it was going to get. After attempting to rest and rehab, Cueto underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this week and will miss at least a year, if not a full season after this year. And with that news, the Giants’ dreams of having their healthy, two-ace rotation were dashed for another season.

That’s more than a full season with no shimmying, no exuberant plate appearances, no dominant Cueto brilliance like we’d seen flashes of even this season.

It’s upsetting not just for baseball reasons, but because he and Pablo Sandoval (who is also out for the season) brought much needed sparks of life to a team that can sometimes come across as dreadfully devoid of personality.

It’s going to be a long year and a half.

However, though he may be gone from the team, he won’t be gone from our lives. Cueto’s Instagram account is a source of constant amusement and insight into his life. Though he is out, he is not down. As indicated by his post-surgery updates:

On my way back to the bay!
