We just debuted “McDeep Dive”, our new series that will spotlight one Giants player every day for a week. We’ll move backwards and forwards through time, look at on the field stuff, off the field stuff, and see if we can learn something new about them. Here’s part 3 of our look at Madison Bumgarner.

Bumgarner’s 2008 Sally League (South Atlantic Lead) debut season was nothing short of extraordinary. He had 164 strikeouts over 141.2 innings (24 starts) at 18 years old. It’s the line that begins a legendary career, and I think you’d agree we’ve seen a steady progression of legend and a career since then.

But it all started here. Watch his first of 15 wins in 2008 from this opponent’s broadcast archived on the ol’ YouTube. The camera work is pretty bad — it’s the RBI Baseball view of the batter and pitcher — but there’s some notable artifacts like some local commercials. Due to the blurriness of the lens, you don’t get to see much in terms of facial expressions until they cut to the closeup fielding camera and you never get to see much of the pitch breaks... but you can figure out from the swings when he threw something offspeed.

He looked like Bumgarner right away.
