The Giants have optioned Andrew Suarez back to Sacramento and recalled right-handed reliever Derek Law to take his spot on the 25-man roster for tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres. Per Andrew Baggarly, the Giants cannot recall Suarez again for 10 days unless it is to replace a player that is injured, implying that this move means that the Giants may be confident that Johnny Cueto could return before his next scheduled start.
Giants cannot recall Suarez for 10 days unless he replaces an injured player. So one would surmise that #SFGiants are confident Johnny Cueto will not have to miss another start.

Some might wonder why not keep Suarez and option Tyler Beede instead, based on their performances this week. This is likely due to the fact that Beede’s spot in the current rotation comes up again first, on Sunday, which is right before an off day that happens to be Cueto’s last day on the 10-day disabled list, allowing him to start Tuesday in Arizona.
Law’s stock has fallen after a rough 2017, but coming through in this injury call-up situation is the perfect opportunity for him to reverse that trend. He struggled against both righties and lefties last season, but that .403 OBP allowed to lefties is really quite striking. The most dangerous hitters this series are all lefties. Bochy will likely give him a shot. Here’s hoping he makes the most of it.
