The Giants’ Tuesday could’ve been truly terrible with a loss. One day does not a season make, but a lot of the bad news has begun to pile up and with the loss of Cueto following the losses of Bumgarner and Samardzija, combined with the losses of Longoria and Melancon, another frustrating loss against a powerhouse like the Diamondbacks could’ve derailed this early season momentum.
Sports momentum is, of course, psychological, but the Giants need Ws in the Psychology column after last season. A .500 team does not make me happy, but it doesn’t make me miserable, and if the Giants can keep pulling out ugly wins, that’ll keep me feeling like they’re worth watching night in and night out.
In the meantime, assume that Mark Melancon’s baseball career is nearing its end. A pitcher with a dying muscle who can’t pitch for very long without experiencing so much pain that he needs to be shut down is a pitcher who won’t be a pitcher for very much longer.
