Ex-Giants around the majors

Where are our old friends hanging out?

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays
Whoa whoa whoa, calibrate those machines, don’t let them hit Matt Duffy, he just got back from missing all of 2017
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Sure, you’re here because you like the San Francisco Giants. But you know who you also like? The San Francisco Giants of past years. So, just like I did last year, I’m going to bring you all sorts of information about where those San Francisco Giants of past years are playing this year.

SPOILER: Mostly the American League.

NL West

Diamondbacks
None.

Rockies
The Rockies are managed by Bud Black, who was a Giants pitcher from 1991 to 1994.

Dodgers
Former Giants great Dave Roberts is the manager, but the Colletti years are truly over, as there are no players left with Giants connections.

Padres
None.

NL Central

Pirates
George Kontos! Let me tell you, after going 0-for-the-NL-West, I got a little worried about this bit, so it’s good to see someone actually show up so I don’t have to make a joke about how, like, Jameson Taillon is a Giant in my heart or whatever.

Cubs
Their first base coach is Max And Molly’s Kid, but that’s it.

Reds
Luis Castillo was a Giants farmhand who they included in the Casey McGehee trade which, ha ha, whoops! He’s also given up 10 runs in 10 innings so far this year, so the Giants might yet win that trade.

(Some news comes in over my earpiece)

I am being told that the Giants will definitely not win that trade.

And the Reds also have Adam Duvall, of course. He’s off to a slow start this year, but he’s had a very nice career in Cincinnati with lots of power and surprisingly good left field defense. But that’s fine. It’s not like that type of player would have helped the Giants out the last couple of years.

Brewers
None.

Cardinals
Bill Mueller and Willie McGee are both assistant coaches with St. Louis.

NL East

Braves
Charlie Culberson! Thanks for the 2012 Scutaro, Charlie. We still very much appreciate it. And first base coach Eric Young was a Giant for part of 2003. He wasn’t good, but he sure was there, and that’s what we’re commemorating here.

Marlins
None.

Phillies
None. They’re all young and have people talking about their bright future and crap. Whatever, Phillies.

Nationals
None. They were dumb to fire Dusty, but not because it meant there were no ex-Giants on their coaching staff. They were just dumb.

Mets
None.

AL West

Astros
Max Stassi’s from Yuba City, so uh...

No, I’m not reaching. You’re reaching. NEXT TEAM.

Angels
None.

A’s
Here we go. Here’s the good stuff. Do you want to hear about Santiago Casilla? You know you do. What about Yusmeiro Petit? They were both very good Giants and absolutely key to the 2014 World Series — Casilla also helped with the other two, of course — and Giants fans should never forget their contributions to the franchise.

Wouldn’t put it past the A’s to charge them $50 for parking though.

But we’re not done with the A’s! Because their coaching staff is loaded with former Giants. We all know about Bob Melvin, who was a Giants catcher between 1986 and 1988. And the A’s hired Matt Williams to be their third base coach this year. But do you want a deep cut? Then I’ve got a deep cut for you. The A’s bullpen coach is Marcus Jensen, also known as The Guy The 1997 Giants Traded To The Tigers For Brian Johnson.

Hopefully, this information will make up for the fact that there are only four ex-Giants playing in the entire dang National League, and one of them was traded away before his major league debut.

Mariners
They’ve got Mike Leake, and I have way too much respect for you, the smart, educated McCovey Chronicles reader who is completely immune to flattery, to pretend that anything about Mike Leake is interesting.

Rangers
Well, let’s check in on our good pal Matt Moore. Has he resurrected his career so as to make the Giants regret getting rid of him in a salary dump?

Oh.

Ah, well, alas.

But you’re not looking in the Rangers section for Matt Moore, are you? No, you’re here for...another pitcher. Perhaps one who you heard about for a while, then you heard less about, and now he’s with Texas? Well, unfortunately, Clayton Blackburn’s on the 60 day DL with a UCL injury and will have Tommy John surgery. It’s sad news.

And then, of course, there is Tim Lincecum. Lincecum is currently on the 10-day DL; he and the team were both hoping that he could face batters by the end of Spring Training, but he started to have issues with blisters, so he’s been shut down until the blister problems get resolved. When he does get to the majors this year, he’s going to be in the bullpen, where he will compete for the closer job. Does that mean he won’t throw a no-hitter against the Padres this year? Absolutely not.

AL Central

Royals
None, though there are many players here who lost the 2014 World Series.

White Sox
None.

Indians
First off, they signed Rajai Davis to a minor league deal over the offseason and he ended up making the team, so it’s not just the Giants who re-sign their speedy, probably not that good anymore outfielders and then inevitably put them on the roster. Davis has been around forever — the Giants got him from Pittsburgh in the Matt Morris deal in 2007 — and it’s nice to see him still playing big league innings.

The Indians also have Dan Otero, who has been excellent for Cleveland for several years, and I will always think if he’d been on their postseason roster last year, they’d have beaten the Yankees in the ALDS. I haven’t worked out any details of this. Please don’t ask.

Also, their bullpen coach is Scott Atchison, a key figure in the vicious Giese-Atchison Wars that defined so much of the early history of this site.

Tigers
It turns out Francisco Liriano is still kicking around the majors. He won a World Series ring last year with the Astros, so really, going by rings, that Pierzynski trade was fair. Each side received a player who won one World Series ring. Sounds pretty equitable to me.

Twins
Folks, do you want an update on former Giants third base coach Gene Glynn, who currently has the same job for the Twins? No? Well, okay, that’s fair.

But what about Ehire Adrianza? You want some sweet Ehire Adrianza content? Also no? Aw man, you’re no fun.

AL East

Blue Jays
None.

Orioles
None.

Red Sox
Look, I liked Eduardo Nuñez as a person and as a player. I’m happy he got to come back to the Red Sox, where he had such great success last year, even if he did get hurt in the playoffs. I am not going to miss having to search back through the site’s archives every time I talk about him so that I don’t have to put the tilde over the N myself. What I’m saying is: this works out for everyone, but especially me, because I don’t like doing work.

Heath Hembree is also still around. Hembree’s had a nice career in Boston, and Jake Peavy helped the Giants win the 2014 World Series. Good trade, Sabes. Proud of you.

Also, 2002 National League champion Tom Goodwin is the Red Sox first base coach. Is this the first time you’ve thought about Tom Goodwin in the last 15 years? Possibly!

Yankees
Last year’s Giants third base coach, Phil Nevin, is this year’s Yankees third base coach.

Rays
And we finish up with the Rays, home of several ex-Giants. Denard Span is with them, having gone over in the Longoria deal to make the money work out. He has been an entirely serviceable left fielder for a Tampa team that has, pretty much, been a disaster. And Sergio Romo is still slidering it up, and has been reasonably effective in the early going.

But as Matt Moore collapsed last year, it was Matt Duffy who became a topic of conversation, with people wondering what was going on with him, what was happening, was he hurt, was he thinking about us, did he just look over here, no don’t look over there just look without looking, I don’t know just do it. Duffy is playing again, and while he’s more 2016 Duffman than the 2015 version, it’s great to see him on the field, contributing to his team. You never want to see such a likable guy taken down by injuries so early in his career, so here’s to hoping he sticks around in Tampa for a while.

And that’s it, based on my meticulous methodology of looking at all the teams’ rosters and hopefully not missing anyone. If I did miss a player, then let me know in the comments and I’ll fix the mistake. If I missed a coach, I probably don’t care and you shouldn’t either.
