Giants add three pitchers to 40-man roster

Two of these were obvious, the other less so.

The Giants have added three pitchers to the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft on December 13. As Roger predicted, Melvin Adon and Logan Webb were added and Chase Johnson was outrighted to triple-A. Joining Adon and Webb is Sam Coonrod.

Johnson’s removal from the 40-man roster means that he was exposed to waivers, but no other team wanted to add him to their own. Julian Fernández, on the other hand, did not make it through as the Marlins claimed him off waivers last night.

Adon had a tremendous showing in the Arizona Fall League, striking out 21 in 12 1/3 innings while walking just three. His inclusion should come as no surprise. He has the velocity of Fernández, but he has far more upside.

Logan Webb was the other obvious choice here. After missing most of 2016 to Tommy John, Webb had a meteoric 2018 and ended the year with a solid month in double-A Richmond.

Sam Coonrod is the surprise addition. Coonrod likewise missed a big chunk of time to Tommy John, and he transitioned to the bullpen. His performance in limited time this year was also mixed. He struck out 23 batters in the 11 2/3 innings he pitched, but he also gave up 10 runs.

Some notable omissions from this group are Juan De Paula, Sam Wolff, and CJ Hinojosa. The Giants acquired De Paula in the Andrew McCutchen trade, and it’s possible Farhan Zaidi sees less value in what Bobby Evans brought back. Sam Wolff came over in the Matt Moore trade, and Zaidi likewise appears nonplussed with him. Oddly enough, the McCutchen trade also brought back Abiatal Avelino, who makes Hinojosa somewhat redundant.

Sandro Fabian and Jordan Johnson were also left off the 40-man. Fabian and Johnson are listed as the Giants number 8 and 23 best prospects according to MLB Pipeline.

With these transactions we’ve seen some of the first plans laid by Farhan Zaidi’s Giants, and those plans include Sam Coonrod.
