All remains quiet on the Farhan front, so we don’t really have a sense of the Giants’ plans for these next few months of the offseason. We can assume trades, sure, and as Roger mentioned yesterday, some 40-man roster transactions ahead of the Rule 5 Draft, but what about the free agents?
The team does have some money to spend — it’s in the $40-$50 million range before the CBT threshold, depending on how you want to figure in the arbitration raises — and so we can assume that some of that might be spent on free agents. Not the top of the market kind, perhaps, but perhaps some useful players. The team could also use their cap space (face it: baseball has a salary cap now — great job, Players Union!) to absorb another team’s bad contract to get some prospects, but for now, let’s just say that Zaidi and his yet to be determined Co. will still use some of the money to sign players without a team.
On that note, here’s a list of middle- to lower-tier free agents. For now, I’ll omit pitchers from this because there are too many of them and the market feels more volatile where starters and relievers are concerned. Of the rest, who would you like to see them sign and/or what do you predict they’ll get in years and AAV?
