Yes, there is some discussion of Joey Bart. But, to bring up prospects, let’s for a moment consider Eno Sarris’ article in The Athletic yesterday (subscription required) where he straight up propose the Giants trade Madison Bumgarner for the Braves’ RHP Bryse Wilson (pictured above).
He throws 95-plus mph with a plus changeup and a slurve that shows promise and is at least league average. That talent package is too much, this argument goes, for an aging starter on a one-year deal, even one who has been an ace.
Eno’s point was that the Giants should trade Bumgarner now during the offseason since it’s unlikely he will improve his value much over the first few months of the season (hey there, declining peripherals and spin rates!). I tend to agree.
On that note, he recommended trading all of the good relievers at the deadline due to the high acquisition costs for such players during recent deadlines. On that particular note, I wonder if that trend won’t change this year, given how successful it was not just during the playoffs, but during the regular season, too.
Tony Watson and Bumgarner could be an interesting deal in its own right.
