And one more time, hooray for Miguel Gomez! Signed late. Spent three years in the DSL until he was nearly 22. Then assigned to short season ball. Last year was held back in XST for a month after arriving late to camp (possibly with a visa issue I think). He showed up in full season ball for the first time in his 5th season on April 29 of 2016 reporting to the Sally league. Just over 14 months later, he walked into his first big league dugout. Congrats, Miggy. That’s a hell of a rise. This is a man who definitely hit his way off the island. If the bat will play, they’ll find a way as the saying goes.
Miguel Gomez arrived in the big leagues ahead of schedule. His bags did not: https://t.co/CLMifO7hv2

The RiverCats offense abandoned starter Matt Gage who had a very impressive second AAA outing. Gage matched a season high with 7 Ks while walking no one and allowed just 1 ER. His one hiccup came in the 5th when he allowed back to back singles to open the inning. A Mac Williamson throwing error set the Rainiers up with runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs and before the inning was over they were able to cash both runners in.
That was enough to secure the victory on yet another night when the Sacramento offense lay flat. This was the third time this month (7 games played) that Sacramento has scored 1 or 0 runs. Yikes. While managing just two hits, they struck out 12 times adding to their season total of 719 which is third worst in the PCL.
The lone bright spot (and one who could conceivably be in SF today, though I suspect Jarrett Parker will end up getting the call) was Orlando Calixte, who leads the RiverCats in just about every category a player can lead an offense.
That was Calixte’s (yes) team-leading 34th RBI of the year. And when the dust was settled the offense looked upon what it had done, saw that it was good and collectively said “our work is done here” and took the rest of the night off. Juan Ciriaco’s ground ball single in the 6th was their only other hit on the night.

Sam Coonrod’s velocity is down a tick from where I’ve seen him previously. Last night he was pitching pretty consistently at 90-92, where I’ve seen him sit more 94 in the past. Possibly as a result of the loss of his bigger fastball he was leaning quite heavily last night on his 86-87 slider which he used very effectively, often throwing it multiple pitches in a row. Here he is striking out Austin Hays, one his 3 Ks on the night (sorry about the shaky cam, forgot my tiny tripod):
His line score probably looks a little better than his performance did as he gave up a good amount of hard contact that OF ran down. Mike Yastrzemski hit a bolt to deep CF (on a night when balls weren’t traveling particularly well) that went out for a two-run HR. But other than that the only two runs that scored both came as a result of Rando Moreno errors (the second of which was a bit controversial).
By far (by FAR, by FAAAAAAAAAR), CJ Hinojosa is the best looking prospect on this team, which is frankly, a shockingly thin AA roster. Hinojosa worked good at bats last night, showed good bat speed and mostly made pretty good contact. And better yet, he looked great in the field. Last year when he arrived in AA, Hinojosa frequently looked rushed, as if the speed of the AA game was overwhelming him. But last night (and this year in general) he was calm and relaxed and showed excellent defensive actions, good hands and a strong arm. His finest play was one of the turning points of the game. With a man on 1st and cheating towards 2b in double play formation, Hinojosa had to range far to his left to snag a hard grounder, and twirling from the grass he fired a bolt to 2b that should have gotten the runner and might even had led to a sensational double play, had not Rando Moreno dropped the ball for his second costly error of the night.
That play led to a lot of arguing, as Kyle Haines wanted the ump to rule that Moreno dropped the ball going for the throw (the ump made the right call IMO) and in the ensuing scrum Slade Heathcott managed to get himself thrown out arguing with the 1st base ump for what appeared to be the home plate ump’s strike zone. Quite a scene. Anyway, that play would allow the tying run to score in the 7th and to extras we would go.
The late innings were a parade of high velo as one reliever after another came in throwing 95s and 96s. The biggest arms were on the Bowie side (particularly Scott McGeough and Jefri Hernandez) which was true all game as Bowie starter David Hess, when he could find the strike zone, had a terrific night, working his fastball up to 97 before he was done. Hess, the Orioles one time #18 prospect, worked out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in his final inning by striking out Dylan Davis, Jeff Arnold, and Rando Moreno successively, throwing his final two pitches of the night at 97.
Another controversial play led to the walkoff. With two outs in the 11th, Baby Yaz drilled a ball into the gap. Myles Schroder jumped on it and made a fantastic throw into second that Yaz barely beat. However in his hurry to get to 2b Yaz slid past the bag and with Moreno between him and the base it seemed impossible he could get back to it. Yet the 2b ump ruled that he juked and jived and got that hand back to the bag safely. More arguing from Haines (without a replay I have no idea, it was close). Bowie’s terrific OF prospect Austin Hays brought Yaz home with the winner one pitch later.
Please please please send me Aramis Garcia, Bryan Reynolds, and Ryan Howard, Giants. This team is reallyi n need of some prospects!
However, CJ does get himself a deserved reward:

Here’s an interesting baseball trivia question to which I have no idea what the answer is: what’s the most hits one team has ever had with only one player contributing all of them? Whatever the answer is, the Giants were going for it last night, as Aramis Garcia’s three hits accounted for 100% of San Jose’s total on the night. Maybe it was the Turtle outfits.
Garcia had been just 2 for 19 prior to his outburst, so it was definitely a nice turnaround for him. As you can hear from the commentary, he’d been looking a little late on fastballs in the past few days, but he made a nice adjustment in this first inning at bat and went on to a terrific day at the plate.
The fine one time scout for the Mariners (and others) Bernie Pleskoff published his scouting report on Garcia yesterday, and it’s a pretty good look (as is typically true of Bernie) at Aramis’ strengths and weaknesses (as well as the weakness of the Giants’ system at the position):

Sandro Fabian didn’t dominate the Augusta line score to the degree that Aramis Garcia did San Jose’s but he was pretty much the offensive story here with a double and his 5th HR. After a prolonged dry spell that knocked his average back into the .230s, Fabian has three two-hit games in a four game stretch. That 6 for 15 includes two doubles and a HR. The teenager has about a 33% ratio of XBH/H this year with 19 doubles and 5 HR in his 73 hits. Obviously, his approach still needs a great deal of refinement as he has a godawful 63 K/ 6 BB line on the season that’s really dragging him down. He’s worked just two walks since the 1st of June. That’ll need some fixing, Sandro!

The Volcanoes got big contributions from several old sources and a new one in overcoming a rough outing from starter Stetson Woods (and his fielders). Ryan Kirby, who’s been on fire this week, hit a game-winning two run HR in the top of the 9th to break a 7-7 tie. It was Kirby’s third hit of the game, 8th in his past two games, and provided his league leading 20th and 21st RBIs. Kirby wasn’t able to do too much to escape from the crowd in his short stay in Augusta, but he’s been red hot in a return to the NWL.
Kirby’s hit rampage has his batting up to .349 which puts him in a tie for the league lead with teammate Malique Ziegler. The pair are also 2nd and 3rd in the NWL League in OPS, in a virtual tie there as well with Ziegler at .937 and Kirby at .936. The two have definitely been the cogs in the Volcanoes offensive machine.
Ziegler didn’t hide his talents under a bush in this game either. He doubled to leadoff the game and come round to score the first run. He ended up 2 for 4 with a sac bunt. He did have some rough elements outside the batters’ box though as he was picked off 1b once, and let a line-drive get past him to the wall for a costly three-run error (well, I guess just two-runs came in on the error).
The newcomer to the machine was Texas Tech draftee Orlando Garcia, again playing 2b rather than SS. Garcia picked up his second HR in just six games with Salem-Keizer and after a week in the NWL he sports a .304/.292/.565 line. Ah the old OBP lower than the batting average gambit. Yes, if you wondered, he has yet to draw a walk in his career (7 Ks).
5th round pick Jason Bahr recovered from a disastrous on the 4th, to throw 2 perfect innings with 3 Ks to pick up the win.
I said the Volcanoes defeated the AquaSox which seems accurate, but it seems according to their social media that the Sox are now the Frogs for whatever reason. I have no idea

The AZL team was willing to sit back and take what the opposition would give them and in the first two innings, the Rangers were in an extremely giving mood. In addition to their 15 hits, the Giants were the beneficiaries of eight walks, three HBP, and three errors (including two by the brilliantly named Obie Ricumstrict. OBIE RICUMSTRICT!).
The Giants batted around in the first inning with the help of three walks, a HBP, a WP, and a popup to 2b that turned into a hit. They then batted around again in a 2nd inning that included a walk, two HBP, a WP, and an error. With back to back 5-run innings in the book they were able to coast to a tidy 14-5 win.
Heliot Ramos walked to open the first inning and doubled to open the second (and bee tee dubs, if anybody wants to get pedantic on my use of the term “batted around” I will point out that Ramos DID come to the plate twice in the first inning, he just didn’t get the opportunity to finish the 2nd AB). For the game he’d reach base three times thanks to a second walk and steal his 4th base of the year. Is the Heliot the power-speed guy I’ve been awaiting ever since Bobby Bonds ripped my heart out by failing to 40/40 in 1973? It’s too soon to tell, but undoubtedly YES!

Heliot’s partner in crime, Jacob Gonzalez also had a 1 for 4 day with a double and a HBP.
The big hitters of the day were a couple of 2016 DSL Giants. Seventeen year old OF Diego Rincones who doubled his season hit total by picking up five hits (all singles). And Angeddy Almanzar, who was the DSL team’s best hitter last year, had a three hit day including a double, just his second XBH of the year.
Matt Lujan reappeared to get some rehab work in, his first appearance since May 17. Pat Young is also rehabbing down in the AZL. And LHP Sidney Duprey, like his 2016 draft-classmate, is still struggling to throw strikes, walking four in his three innings of work to give him 7 walks in 11.1 IP in the rookie league.

Of the 18 runs scored in this game, 8 were earned! Welcome to the DSL. The Giants were actually the more fast and loose with the ball as they surrendered six unearned runs (of 8) thanks to errors from Jose Patino, Samuel Jorge, Enoc Watts, and Andrew Caraballo. However, the group banged out 10 hits and 10 runs to survive and conquer.
A 4-run rally in the 7th gave them the lead for good. That rally included five hits including Samuel Jorge’s third double of the year. Andrew Caraballo, playing SS in this one, had a fine game with two hits including a double and a walk. Caraballo was signed for $170,000 out of Venezuela last year and is expected to be an offensive-minded SS.
Wascar De Leon continued to put together a fine repeat campaign with two hits and a walk, including a triple. That was one of two triples the team hit on the day with SS Enoc Watts providing the other.
