SF Giants Minor Lines 6/19/17

A trio of RiverCats take Jon Gray deep.

Figuring out the OF mix just got a tiny bit more complicated. Look who’s back — and getting Kinsler’d!

Another interesting part about Parker’s return is that he played CF (and I will freely admit that only three months of watching Gorkys Hernandez could make me think that’s interesting). In classic Parker style, he struck out in his other two PA in his return. Still, Minor Lines salutes all the work that Jarrett’s put in the last two months to get himself back on the field.

HIGHLIGHTS: Conor Gillaspie picked up three hits; Alejandro De La Rosa struck out 8 in 5 shutout innings; Norwith Gudino struck out 9 in 7.1 IP.

The RiverCats lineup got a great challenge, going up against Rockies rehabbing ace Jon Gray. And though Gray struck out 7 in his 4.1 inning stint, the core of Sacramento’s order did get off some good swings against him.

Take this classic power on power matchup with Chris Shaw catching up to a Gray fastball:

Woo, boy, that thing went a ways. What’s the Home Run Tracker say about that one?

An inning later, immediately following Parker’s shot, Mac Williamson got his arms extended. And when Mac gets his arms extended he can do some damage.

In a weird statistical oddity, there were 9 hits in this game before anybody singled. In fact, of the, ultimately 25 hits in the game, an astounding 16 went for extra bases.

Which, I suppose, leads us to the less pleasant aspect of our report: Tyler Beede is in a full-on scuffle right now. In his last five starts he’s allowed 29 runs in 29.1 IP. He’s given up 42 hits including 9 HRs, 13 doubles and a triple. While there’s certainly some PCL hijinx at work there, in his last three starts he’s allowed 18 runs and two of those starts were in Sacramento.

In last night’s game, Beede couldn’t hang onto a 5-2 lead and was knocked out of the game in the 5th. He didn’t give up the longball in this outing, but he was touched up for 8 XBH (out of 10 hits total) in just 24 batters faced. Oof! (so long Adam West!)

It’s been a rough AAA transition for the Giants’ #1 prospect. His ERA is up to 5.40, his FIP is higher yet, and his peripherals haven’t been encouraging either (60 Ks, 29 BB in 79 IP). But that’s development, sometimes you eat the baar and sometimes, the baar eats you.

Conor Gillaspie picked up three hits and probably is ready to return to the majors. He’s a little more than two weeks into his rehab assignment so they’ll need to make a decision on him soon. I would imagine Conor could be flipped to a contender looking to bolster a roster, though it’s pretty early in the trade season for that kind of transaction.

Another notable line in this game is Jae-Gyun Hwang’s. Hwang once again appeared as a PH in this game. Hwang’s playing time has gotten a little sporadic of late, starting just three times in the last 10 days. Hwang suffered through a brutal May, hitting just .245/.248/.472. He’s been much better in June (.308/.397/.519) though his playing time has dropped a bit (just 52 ABs this month). Hwang is another player who will need a decision in the near future.

Lastly, you definitely want to check out this audio interview of Chris Shaw from the always excellent Ally Williams for Marty Lurie’s show. Of particular interest to me is the way the org prepares for position changes far in advance:

Richmond had a scheduled off day

which allows me some space to post this feature that ESPN did for Father’s Day, when Flying Squirrels announcer Sam Ravech was joined in the booth for an inning by his Dad:

San Jose is on it’s All Star Break

Aramis Garcia took part in the Cal League HR derby last night, very nearly advancing to the final round.

But the hometown hero did top Garcia’s total with 15 and went on to collect the prize.

But every All Star festivities has a HR derby. How many have a chicken catching contest?

Thanks very much to colleague Jen Mac Ramos for that footage!

Augusta is on it’s All Star Break

Like San Jose, they’ll return for the second half on Thursday.

Vic Black 1 3 2 2 1 1 0 9.00

Alejandro De La Rosa had a scintillating start to his 2017 season, striking out 8 in 5 shutout innings. But when he left things got out of hand as three relievers, including former New York Met Vic Black allowed 7 runs over the final four innings to send the Volcanoes to defeat.

The Volcanoes hitters managed just 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 14 times, but they did manage to steal 7 (yes, 7!) more bases. In one of the odder lines of recent memory, Manuel Geraldo went 0 for 2 but stole 4 bases. Does that seem like a lot?

Why yes! It is!

Here’s another odd note from the game: the Volcanoes lone XBH was a triple from Kevin Rivera who went 1 for 4. Rivera has just 4 hits for the Volanoes on the young season, but three of them have been triples.

The Volcanoes hottest hitter continues to be Robinson Medrano, who is now 7 for 15 on the season, rocking a cool .467/.500/.667 line.

Oliver Pinto 0.2 1 1 1 1 0 0 2.70

In a similar story to the Volcanoes game, Norwith Gudino was mostly brilliant over 7.1 innings, striking out 9 and walking none. But he tired a little down the stretch giving up solo runs in both the 7th and 8th (thanks to two triples) that sent the game to extra innings. There the Diamondbacks scored three 10th inning runs to put it away.

The offensively challenged Giants squad scored solo runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and all involved a combination of walks, errors, and WP. Returnee Franklin Labour has been the Giants best hitter, picking up hits in 12 of the 13 games he’s played. Labour is batting .341/.408/.477.

Today’s Scheduled Starters:
Sacramento: Chris Stratton vs. Ryan Carpenter
Richmond: Sam Coonrod vs. Jack Wynkoop
San Jose: OFF
Augusta: OFF
Salem-Keizer: Alex Bostic vs. TBD
DSL: Francis Pena

Lastly, speaking of HR derbies, this has nothing to do with the Giants’ org, but it sure is cool!
