Giants release provisional 2017 schedule

New, 39 comments

The 2017 Giants schedule has them opening in Arizona, in Detroit on the 4th of July, and facing the Padres ... wait, 18 times again?

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants’ 2017 schedule is here, at least the provisional version, and they will play the fake Opening Day in Arizona on the Sunday before the real Opening Day. This will be the eighth straight season the team has opened on the road.

It also turns out that the Giants still have to play in Coors Field several times next season. I don’t care if baseball isn’t taking my advice, but they could at least acknowledge that they’re getting my letters.

There aren’t a lot of surprises on the schedule — they’re not ending the season against the Twins or going through August without an off day — and there sure are a lot of Padres games. I had my hopes up, but, yep, there they are, right there. The biggest surprise would be five off days in September, considering they have just two this September. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

The home and away breakdown for every month:

April: 12 away, 14 home, three off days
May: 16 away, 13 home, two off days
June: 16 away, 11 home, three off days
July: 12 away, 13 home, six off days
August: 13 away, 15 home, two off days
Sept./Oct.: 12 away, 14 home, five off days

The first half is heavy on away games. The second half is heavy on home games and off days. That's one way to prevent a second-half collapse that makes you hate the sport of baseball!
