Giants, Cubs set starting lineups for Game 1 of NLDS

New, comments

Just like we all guessed in March, Gorkys Hernandez is leading off in a postseason game.

Back on New Year’s Day, I asked who the Even Year Hero was going to be. The Giants hadn’t signed Conor Gillaspie yet, so don’t give me too much grief for the limited pool of candidates. In the comments, I learned that the Giants signed Gorkys Hernandez.

Well played, Roger. Here’s your chance. Gorkys Hernandez is leading off for the Giants against a left-hander.

  1. Gorkys Hernandez - CF
  2. Brandon Belt - 1B
  3. Buster Posey - C
  4. Hunter Pence - RF
  5. Angel Pagan - LF
  6. Brandon Crawford - SS
  7. Kelby Tomlinson - 2B
  8. Conor Gillaspie - 3B
  9. Johnny Cueto - P

With Eduardo Nuñez out, the Giants were just a little too lefty-heavy against Jon Lester, who has been especially brutal against lefties this year (.540 OPS against), so they’re going with Gorkys and Kelby.

Also, there’s a Gorkys and Kelby on the team. Felt like that should be highlighted for a bit.

The defense gets stronger in center but weaker at second. All told, it’s probably the best lineup the Giants can put out there right now.

The Cubs will counter with, well, a bunch of good players:

  1. Dexter Fowler - CF
  2. Kris Bryant - 3B
  3. Anthony Rizzo - 1B
  4. Ben Zobrist - LF
  5. Addison Russell - SS
  6. Jason Heyward - RF
  7. Javier Baez - 2B
  8. David Ross - C
  9. Jon Lester

I do wonder what the dominoes would have been if the Giants signed Zobrist. Would Angel Pagan still be playing center? It boggles the mind.

So onward, Gorkys! Onward, Kelby! The year is divisible by two, which gives you eerie powers. Use them.
