The Giants will go with 11 pitchers against the Mets on Wednesday, keeping Eduardo Nuñez off the roster because of his lingering hamstring injury, and adding Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija as relief options, just in case.
The full roster:
Madison K. Bumgarner
The biggest surprise? Cory Gearrin not making the roster, perhaps. He was roughed up after returning from injury, but he had looked a little sharper as of late. Joe Nathan not making it is expected, but it’s easier to imagine him helping out than Casilla.
And while we’re nitpicking, I’d feel more comfortable with a third catcher in the event of an emergency than two additional starting pitchers. Is that weird? Too tentative? Maybe that’s my own quirk, but I’m more scared of this ...
... than I am of using Johnny Cueto to pitch a bunch of innings, then looking around and thinking "WHERE’S SAMARDZIJA?" in a game the Giants can still win.
Still, that’s nitpicking. This is just about the roster we expected. Posey’s there. Crawford’s there. Hey, Pence made it. And Madison Bumgarner is going to start. If the game goes 25 innings, the Giants will be prepared with two extra starting pitchers and all the pinch-hitters they can handle.
Note that only I can write the possibility of the game going 25 innings, because if you write it three times, it actually happens. Uh, and I guess that’s the second time. Be careful out there, Giants fans.
