The story of this game was Visalia's pitcher Luke Irvine, who threw a complete game shutout. With 12 strikeouts (the only San Jose starter not to strike out was center fielder Seth Harrison), six hits and just one walk, Irvine dominated the San Jose team, propelling the Rawhide to a 2-0 game lead in the series.
The Giants countered with a great start by Christian Jones, a converted reliever who made just his fourth start of the season. Jones only allowed three hits and struck out five. This was both his longest start of the season (getting into the fifth twice before, but not out of it), and the first start in which he didn't give up a run. But one of San Jose's best weapons in the bullpen lost it. In the 7th inning, Tyler Rogers was in his second inning of work and gave up a one-out triple to Stewart Ijames. That was followed up by a single by Kevin Cron, and Ijames scored what would be the game's only run.
The San Jose offense still featured Christian Arroyo, the only Giant to get multiple hits. He's batting .304 in the playoffs now, and has a pair of hits in each of his last three games. Armies Garcia was the only other Giant to reach base twice, collecting the team's only walk. Daniel Carbonell collected the first hit he's gotten in the last three games, and he's batting just .125 in the postseason.
The Playoffs return to San Jose on Monday night for Game 3, with the Giants starting Jason Forget in the do-or-die game. The 25-year old went five innings, giving up one run in his first playoff start of the season, and had a 2.67 ERA on the regular season. Meanwhile, the Rawhide will start Miller Diaz. The 23-year old had a 4.75 ERA overall this season, playing mostly in with the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League before coming over to the Diamondbacks organization in the Addison Reed trade. He gave up 7 ER in 12 innings pitched for Visalia (5.25 ERA), including five runs in his final start.
