We'll get to Tyler Beede's start in a bit, but first, guess what time of year it is!
Press box full of scouts. #Pirates, #RedSox, #Cleveland and several others. Some scouts already seated. Rumors on Beede + his start...
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 20, 2015
From the looks of it, six to eight teams are here scouting tonight.
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 20, 2015
Would have to assume any trade including Beede would get the #SFGiants a big name. Also a nice piece to keep long term. Enviable position.
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 21, 2015
HIGHLIGHTS: Nik Turley threw 6 hitless innings. Sam Coonrod allowed 1 unearned run in 8 innings. CJ HInojosa and Shil McCall both doubled and HR'd.

On the field for BP! pic.twitter.com/HvrkccOfJ4
— Kristin (@legaleagle88) July 20, 2015
The Sacramento offense was my no means prolific last night. Only Lollis with a single and a walk, and Brandon Hicks, with a single and a HBP, reached base twice. They had eight hits, including two doubles, and just one walk on the night. But they were decently efficient, managing five runs. And that should have been enough for a rout, but it wasn't quite.
Nik Turley, has had an up and down year. But he was definitely up in this one, throwing 6 hitless innings with 8 Ks. He did tire at the end, walking his only two batters of the night in his final inning, but he got out of the danger and walked away with a pretty outstanding night.
At that point, the score was 5-0 and it looked like an easy victory. But Steven Okert, once again didn't look right, and a Kevin Frandsen error didn't help him any. The end result was an ugly 4-run 8th inning that included a couple of walks, an error, and a PB. When Erik Cordier was called in to relieve Okert he immediately walked the bases loaded and then surrendered a double that very nearly tied up the game but for the threat of Jarrett Parker's arm.
That wasn't quite all the night's drama either, as Cordier allowed a two-out single and a walk in the 9th, but he escaped for the win.
The most important thing that happened in the 9th, however, was likely this:
Trevor Brown just left the game with an apparent wrist/forearm injury (he got hit there earlier and must've gotten hit again).
— Kristin (@legaleagle88) July 21, 2015
With Quiroz gone and Hector in SF, that's likely going to necessitate some movement. Maybe Guillermo didn't go too far away yet.
Finally, kdl (who got to hang out on the field before the game) wants us to know that Kelby Tomlinson playing catch with a little kid in the stands is the cutest thing ever

In front of all those myriad scouts mentioned above, Tyler Beede got off to a fantastic start last night.
Beede's fastball sitting around 91-93. Good to great movement.
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 20, 2015
. @tylerbeede looks great tonight. 3 IP, no hits, all pitches working well. One loud out, several ground balls. #SFGiants
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 20, 2015
He set down the first 12 batters in order with a perfect four innings, including lots of ground balls. That streak was broken when he hit the first batter of the 5th inning, and at that point, he lost his tempo and location a bit, which led him into a big inning. I think that's something we've seen from Beede before this year, that if he gets in a long steady rhythm from the windup, when he's first forced into the stretch it can take him a bit to recover that rhythm and location and he gets into big innings. Krukow often talks about that being a big danger to starting pitchers, and learning how to recover quickly is just a part of the development process.
Beede came back with a strong 6th inning to finish his night, which was once again nearly perfect except for, oddly, he once again hit Akron's Anthony Gallas (who leans in a bit) for the second time of the night.
I can't embed the following videos, but if you follow the links in Josh Matthews tweets you'll see some fantastic video footage of Beede's delivery:
Nice movement from @tylerbeede to induce a grounder after a hit batsmen and double- http://t.co/2SOubM5bgY
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 21, 2015
As shown here, @tylerbeede can miss that catch too much of the plate. Batters are able to get good contact then. http://t.co/hhdfpoR834
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 21, 2015
Beede follows that with a breaking ball and made the batter look silly, and this pop-up: http://t.co/xMPxzZU98s
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 21, 2015
On the whole, it sounds like Beede made a positive impression on the assembled crowd, which is a good thing!
Beede has some control issues. When he's on though, watch out. Fastball + sinker plus pitches.
— Josh Mathews (@SquirrelsRVA) July 21, 2015
With the bats, Richmond only had nine baserunners on the night, but they made them count as 5 of the team's 8 hits went for XB. Hunter Cole had a big night going 2 for 4 with a run scoring triple, while Engel Beltre (who now has an 11 game hitting streak), Mitch Delfino, Jax, and Myles Schroder all had doubles. All of the XBH figured in the scoring. Austin Slater came up with an 0fer on the night, thanks to a couple of terrific plays on hard hit balls.
Anyway, don't worry too much about the trade deadline:
Scouts could have been there for #Akron or anyone. Peter Gammons made the original report of calls on Beede, but what do calls mean?

More walk-off madness for the Giants, who have now won 12 of their last 13 games and are suddenly just two games under .500 and firmly into the 2nd half post-season picture. The Giants are just finishing (today) a stretch of 14 out of 17 games at home at the Muni, and they have really made some hay in that stretch. We'll see if they can continue that hot stretch as they now head out for an opposite stretch of 14 out of 18 on the road including tough trips to Bakersfield, Lake Elsinore, and their own personal chamber of horrors, Visalia.
We've talked quite a bit about how the starting pitching has really kick-started this stretch, but another thing that has big a new development for the SJ team is an injection of power hitting. A healthy Tyler Horan has produced a streak of HRs, and Angel Villalona coming back down from AA has brought another power explosion in the lineup. In this game, another source of power showed up, last year's team HR leader Brian Ragira, who hit his 8th of the year in lukewarm pursuit of Horan. Ragira also got on board with what proved to be the winning run in the 11th (John Polonius PR for him and scored the winner).
So here's another way of noting how ridiculously good Jake Smith's year has been. He's 11th in the Cal League in Ks. The 10 pitchers in front of him, and the 7 behind him are all starters. As a relief pitcher, Smith is on a pace to rack up some 120 Ks this year. In fact, the only pitchers in the top 20 of the league in Ks who haven't been full time starters this year are Smith, Martin Agosta (88 Ks), Ian Gardeck (71) and Lake Elsinore's Kyle Lold, who has started 11 of 21 games. Smith has more strikeouts this year, than Chase johnson, despite throwing 24 fewer innings. And Johnson has been fantastic.
Jake Smith: really good 2015.
The walk-off win in this game came courtesy of former big leaguer Jeff Kobernus and apparently, it gave Christian Arroyo the chance to show that he's fully invested in the SF Giants culture:
I never pegged Arroyo for a Belt like celebration guy but there it was #turkeytap
— Julie (@phibear35) July 21, 2015
Arroyo doubled for his only hit of the night. He's hitting .333/.380/.493. I believe he's the 7th youngest player in the Cal league right now. Also, he can do this!
Yay!! Thank you @arroyo_c for winning #smashforcash for me tonight! Is there nothing this first rounder can't do pic.twitter.com/CyhySUMjPn
— Julie (@phibear35) July 21, 2015
Couple other notes on the SJ team. First, a well deserved honor:
Tyler Horan named California League Offensive Player of the Week today. Horan in six games last week: 7-17, 2 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI.
— Joe Ritzo (@JoeRitzo) July 20, 2015
and secondly, there's a new edition of the Inside the SJ Giants podcast up where Joe and Ben discuss the Giants change of fortunes. There's a particularly interesting discussion of Martin Agosta's season that really gives you a feel for his professional journey. You can hear it at the link below, or by subscribing on iTunes, etc.

Sam Coonrod was simply fantastic in this game. He retired the first 14 batters and 21 of the first 22. His improvement in control this year has been remarkable, as he walked 0 to go with his 6 Ks. He was also a groundball machine, getting 12 ground ball outs in his 8 innings. Had it not been for a two-out fielding error by Chase Compton in the 8th inning, he would have walked off the mound with 8 scoreless innings, but what he did was quite alright. He has effort in his delivery (as does Keury Mella), but still this is a very exciting arm that the Giants picked up in the 5th round last year. Of course, when thinking about the starts that Coonrod and Beede had last night, its very useful to remember their relative levels. Beede is going against much much higher levels of competition. But they're both very interesting arms, and along with Mella and Chase Johnson, are probably the class of the system starters right now.
Coonrod pitches GreenJackets past Crawdads in series finale: HICKORY, N.C. – Pitcher Sam Coonrod spun a master... http://t.co/qFU5g08Fdf
— Hickory Daily Record (@hickoryrecord) July 21, 2015
I think it's probably fair to imagine that Johneshwy Fargas, all 6'1", 165 lbs of him (soaking wet) is starting to feel the heat and exhaustion of the long, hot summer. He's definitely put himself on the map this year, but he still needs added strength, and I wouldn't be surprised if this final six weeks is a real struggle with fatigue for the 20 year old.
As I tweeted last night, we're not far away from seeing Fargas' and Aramis Garcia's BA cross paths, it seems as they're both converging on .270. Garcia only got one hit last night, but it was another HR, ho-hum, his 14th.
A commentator asked this question the other day and I dismissed it, but with Brown's injury in Sacramento, one has to wonder if a chain of events won't now send Garcia to SJ as they fill the organizational C stock.
Hey and speaking of Aramis, more honors!
Congratulations to @AramisGarcia44 for being named this week's SAL player of the week! http://t.co/iL1GUttsS7 pic.twitter.com/Jfl7sUBbUV

.@ShiloMcCall is our #VolcanoesPOG for the second straight night. S-K takes 2-1 series edge. #GoSKV pic.twitter.com/aluEggovuE
— Volcanoes Baseball (@SKVolcanoes) July 21, 2015
The Volcanoes bashed out 15 hits, including 3 HRs, to give them a come-from-behind 8-5 victory. Shilo McCall hit a 2 run game tying HR in the 7th inning, and then CJ Hinojosa and Chris Shaw added solo shots in the 8th and 9th to pad out their lead.
Six of the nine starters for the Volcanoes had multiple hits in this game and all nine reached base at least once. Steven Duggar led the charge in the leadoff spot with three hits including his first triple of the year. McCall and Shaw both hit their 4th HRs, while Hinojosa was his first as a professional.
The comeback was necessary because Logan Webb had his toughest start of the year, managing just one inning. I assume he was lifted after going over the 30 pitch limit in a single inning, which is a rule that many orgs follow for younger pitchers. Webb allowed the first four batters of the game to reach base, walking the leadoff batter and then surrendering three consecutive singles. Three of the hits he gave up were ground balls so some BABIP'ing misfortune was involved in his short outing.
After three innings, SK was trailing 5-3, and their late inning comeback was made possible by the strong middle relief effort of 2015 4th rounder Mac Marshall, who gave them 3 hitless innings with 6 Ks. His control was a bit wonky as he did allow 3 BBs and toss in a WP. But all in the all the young LHP looked terrific. Marhsall has K'd 13 of the 35 hitters he's faced in the NWL.

Of the various 17 year old six figure signees on this year's team, the two who have struggled the most are CF Jose Patino and SS Jose Rivero, and they both had big games yesterday. Word came out even before the season that Rivero was really impressing the Giants' coaches in their Dominican camp with his defensive acumen, his hands, his footwork, and his baseball IQ. But he has really struggled on the offensive side of things this year. The 5'11" 160 lb LHH signed for $250k last year. His double yesterday was only his 3rd XBH of the year.
Jose Patino, the Venezuelan OF who has been graded as a 70 runner, signed for $400k. He had a rugged beginning to the year, but he's picked it up significantly since. He's hitting .313/.382/.313 over the last month. The speedy CF has only 1 XBH on the year.
Luis Amaya is now about a month away from his 17th birthday. He got touched up for his 1st professional HR yesterday, more than doubling his ER allowed for the year in one swing of the bat. But he also K'd 6 more batters in 3.1 innings. He's struck out 33 of the 116 batters he's faced on the year, though he's also walked 17. At 5'11", a late-teen growth spurt wouldn't hurt any.

An excellent prospecty day for starting pitchers as the scheduled slate is Ty Blach, Joan Gregorio (again!), and Ray Black with his 100+ fastball all take the mound. Black's game is this afternoon and once again, is viewable on MiLB.tv. I would also think we should be getting close to Mac Williamson rejoining the RiverCats, as the PanAm games ended (in rather amazing, little league type fashion) this weekend.
Excellent week in the Giants system. Let's have another:
