SF Giants Minor Lines, 7/13

We're at the metaphorical half way point. Where are we now?

We're into the All Star Break not just for the big league team but the AAA and AA levels take a break now as well.  The PCL/International League All Star game will be held Wednesday in Omaha, NE. The RiverCats only have one representative going to the game and no surprise, it's this guy:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">ADAM DUVALL- ONLY5 MADE!&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Collect?src=hash">#Collect</a>&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TheHobby?src=hash">#TheHobby</a>&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/DFS?src=hash">#DFS</a>&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TopShelfCards?src=hash">#TopShelfCards</a>&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MLB?src=hash">#MLB</a>&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SFGiants?src=hash">#SFGiants</a>&#10;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BaseballCArds?src=hash">#BaseballCArds</a>&#10;<a href="http://t.co/4irF31yycY">http://t.co/4irF31yycY</a> <a href="http://t.co/8lLQOcBh38">pic.twitter.com/8lLQOcBh38</a></p>&mdash; TopShelfCards (@TopShelfCards) <a href="https://twitter.com/TopShelfCards/status/617373498239905792">July 4, 2015</a></blockquote>

While you may have been glued to the major league HR derby last night, there was a AAA HR derby last night as well and you can see a picture gallery of that here, though sadly no Duvall.  Norfolk's Daniel Alvarez won the contest.

The Eastern League All Star game will also be played tomorrow, in Portland, ME.  Four players will represent Richmond: Ricky Oropesa, Rando Moreno, Kelvin Marte and the Western Division starting pitcher, Joe Biagini.

Congrats to all!

HIGHLIGHTS: AZL teenagers Jalen Miller, Kelvin Beltre, and Byron Murray had 5 hits, 4 doubles, 4 BBs, and 4 SB between them in 9 ABs.

Very tough outing for Mejia in this 12:00 pm start. Perhaps Adalberto shares with Madison Bumgarner a dislike for the early starts. Whatever it was, his control didn't report to the ballpark with him today and 5 BBs and 5 hits (including a three run HR) really did him in. Lots of sharp contact on the hits and even some of the outs.

The Richmond hitters have definitely had an up and down first half, and they're ending it on a down note. Promotions took two of their best bats and cold spells have set in for Oropesa and Rando Moreno, and Devin Harris is locked in ice. Only five singles and a walk in their output today. Austin Slater was the only Squirrel to reach base twice, and that was thanks to a HBP. Even Hunter Cole's been been unable to help lately. And speaking of Hunter Cole,

With Keury Mella in Cincinnati, Luis Ysla got the spot start and continued to put his season back together with a nice outing. Including his last relief outing he has 11 Ks, 2 BBs, 1 Run allowed in his last two appearances over 8 IP. He and Christian Jones will probably continue to climb up the system together as potential situational lefties.

The SJ staff has had a sensational start to the second half.

On offense the Giants used 6 doubles out of their 12 hits to spur their offense. They had no walks but they did get two HB.  With Arroyo taking the day off, and Ryder Jones suffering the hat trick (his second in his last three games), the bulk of the offense came from the bottom half of the order, particularly Carbonell, Horan, and Ragira who combined for 8 of the teams hits and 4 of its doubles.

Vancouver has been a dynastic power in the NWL for several years now, so a five game sweep in Vancouver is a pretty huge accomplishment. Since the college draftees have shown up the Volcanoes offense has been roaring, with now seven straight double-digit hit games.  And the team is showing plenty of depth, managing the hit parade even without leading hitter Jose Vizcaino or leadoff hitter Ronnie Jabavy in the lineup.  Former DSLers Miguel Gomez and Julio Pena continued to hit well, each with 2 hits and multiple RBIs in this game.

If you want to help get some of the Volcanoes to the All Star game (which comes up fast in short season ball), they have a twitter/hash tag fan vote going in the league:

The three teenagers in the lineup led the AZL Giants offense as Miller, Beltre, and Murray combined to reach base 10 times (including Murray's HBP). The trio also had all 4 of the team's XBH, all 4 of the team's SB, 4 of it's 6 BBs, and 4 of its 5 Runs Scored.  The team scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th, when with two outs Miller struck out, but reached base on a WP, and then Beltre doubled him home for the victory.

Let's enjoy some pics of Jalen, courtesy of AZL Giants fan Karen Rambat!

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">2015 3rd round pick SS Jalen Miller, via <a href="https://twitter.com/rambat">@rambat</a>. <a href="http://t.co/2AEB611EeF">pic.twitter.com/2AEB611EeF</a></p>&mdash; GiantsProspectTalk (@giantsprospects) <a href="https://twitter.com/giantsprospects/status/620624461788680192">July 13, 2015</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

And what the heck, since I didn't get enough of these in the other day when Bickford made his debut, here's some more of @rambat's work:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Pictures of first round pick RHP Phil Bickford in action. The AZL team had a week's worth of interesting story lines on the mound for this game.  Former SF Giant Jake Dunning made his first appearance in over a month as he rehabs from injury.  And Michael Santos was back on the mound for the second time in his rehab. Stretched out to 2 IP this time, Santos had an excellent appearance, K'ing 4 of the 7 batters he faced.  Randy Ortiz' conversion to pitching continues to progress slowly (same could have been said in the above section regarding Eric Sim). While Andrew Suarez is likely going to be ready to head to SK soon.  Rounding out the day of rehab appearances, Eury Sanchez K'd 2 of his 4 batters in a scoreless 9th inning.

Ah, the magic of DSL baseball. The Giants scored 8 runs on just 8 hits (two doubles) thanks to 5 BBs from Twins pitching and 4 errors from the Twins defense. But the Twins scored 9 runs on just 5 hits thanks to 8 BBs (and 3 WP) from Giants pitching and 4 errors from the Giants defense. In a minor miracle for a DSL game, however, there were no HB for either team.

This game saw the first start of powerful 1b Brayan De Pena who the Giants signed for $425k last year. We had heard word that the Giants were working on some conditioning issues with him and would get him in soon. Unfortunately the off the field work doesn't seem to have firmed up the bat, as he has K'd in 4 of his first 5 pro PA. Finally, this game saw Manuel Geraldo fail to reach base for the first time since June 12. Back at 'em tomorrow Manuel!

* * *

Today is the shortest schedule of the summer as the AAA and AA leagues are into their break and the Cal, NWL, and AZL leagues have their traditional nights off to let their players watch the major league All Star game and dream their dreams and aspire to their aspirations.

But that doesn't mean there's nothing to look forward to, as Sam Coonrod takes the mound for Augusta, the sole US team in the system playing.
