Over the weekend, Casey McGehee was designated for assignment, which removed him from the 40-man roster. Or so we thought. According to confused beat writers, McGehee was optioned to Sacramento and will start for the Rivercats tonight. Not only that, but he's still on the 40-man roster and can replace Matt Duffy as fast as he can speed down 80.
The double plays will continue until morale improves.
Hey, McGehee probably isn't as bad as he was for the first seven weeks, so this is actually good news. He's probably a better third baseman than anyone other than Matt Duffy, depending on your lack of faith in Adam Duvall's defense. Imagine if Duffy got hurt, for example. That's a whole lot of Joaquin Arias, and after that would be, I don't know, Ronny Cedeno or something. If you assume that McGehee is still the player that projection systems think he is (.250/.314/.346), the Giants could do a lot worse.
Really, it's up to Matt Duffy to hit .300 and end all this silliness himself.
McGehee will start in Triple-A, and ... wait a second. What's that, Baggs?
The Giants informed us today that McGehee was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, has accepted the assignment and will be in uniform for the River Cats Tuesday night when they face Nashville’s Barry Zito.
Enhance.

ENHANCE.
CASEY MCGEHEE WILL HIT AGAINST BARRY ZITO TONIGHT
When you're sucked into the self-referential Giants wormhole that rips apart space-time, don't forget just how awesome that feeling was when Edgar Renteria hit that homer. It was all worth it.
