Giants set 25-man roster, designate Ehire Adrianza for assignment

Erik Cordier and Travis Ishikawa were placed on the DL, which means all of those roster battles we spent all spring talking about didn't really mean anything.

The Giants' 25-man roster is in! There are surprises! People are hurt! People are gone! It's bedlam! Roster madness!

Okay, it's not really that exciting, but there are some surprises, alright. The Giants apparently couldn't find a trade partner who wanted Ehire Adrianza, so they've removed him from the 40-man roster and designated him for assignment. There's a chance that all 29 teams pass on a defense-first shortstop at this time of year, when 40-man rosters are full. Still, the odds are pretty good that Brandon Hicks is now the third shortstop on the depth chart.

The 25-man roster:

Pitchers
Jeremy Affeldt - LHP
Madison Bumgarner - LHP
Matt Cain - RHP
Santiago Casilla - RHP
Tim Hudson - RHP
George Kontos - RHP
Tim Lincecum - RHP
Javier Lopez - LHP
Jean Machi - RHP
Jake Peavy - RHP
Yusmeiro Petit - RHP
Sergio Romo - RHP
Ryan Vogelsong - RHP

Catchers
Buster Posey
Hector Sanchez

Infielders
Joaquin Arias
Brandon Belt
Brandon Crawford
Matt Duffy
Casey McGehee
Joe Panik

Outfielders
Norichika Aoki
Gregor Blanco
Justin Maxwell
Angel Pagan

Adrianza goes; Arias stays. And instead of losing two pitchers from the Machi/Kontos/Cordier group, the Giants take 13 pitchers (!) and Cordier goes on the DL. Get used to a lot of starting pitchers hitting for themselves the inning before they're pulled. You think you miss baseball, and then you read that last sentence ...

If Adrianza clears waivers, he could remain with the organization, and the Giants will have to make a decision at some point with Cordier when he comes off the DL. For now, though, here's the 25-man roster for the defending World Series champions. If you're underwhelmed, that's okay. You were last year, too. (And the year before that. And the year before that ...)
