SF Giants Minor Lines, April 27

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.

Tremendously light night tonight with only Sacramento and Richmond in action, so light that one of the key at bats of the night featured Ronny Cedeno against Joe Saunders, which I know doesn't exactly make the hearts of Minor Lines habitués go giddy. But there was still excitement to be had (h/t to friend of friends of the blog phibear)!

HIGHLIGHTS: Ronny Cedeno reached base 4 times including double and HR. Jarrett Parker had 3 more hits. Hunter Strickland threw 2 perfect innings.

Sacramento defeated Tacoma (Mariners), 6-5 in 10 innings

A see-saw battle throughout the night ended with a walk off courtesy of Jarrett Parker who has been the hottest hitter on the team in April. The RiverCats came back from behind three different times in the game, touching up former teammate Mike Kickham for 4 runs in 5 innings, in no small part thanks to Kickham's four free passes which started off both of their two-run rallies off of him. Sacramento had only 2 XHB among their 9 total but supplemented with 6 BBs and 3 SB. Both XBH came off the bat of former big leaguer Ronny Cedeno, including the biggest blow of the night, his solo HR in the 8th to tie the game up. The HR came off Joe Saunders on the first batter he faced. Saunders would K 6 of the 13 batters he faced overall, but wasn't able to protect the lead, and ultimately took the loss when back to back walks and Parker's single ended the game in the 10th.

EDIT: BONUS HIGHLIGHT!

Jake Dunning managed to give the team almost 6 innings, which is a masterpiece of late for the Sac starters, but he tired in the 6th when a hit batsman, an error and a triple gave up the lead and chased Dunning from the game. Hunter Strickland was perfect over the final two innings to set up the victory.

The woebegone Squirrels' struggles continued as their losing streak reached 10 games. Reading starting pitcher Ben Lively (#6 prospect in the Philadelphia system, acquired from Cincinnati) shut down the Richmond offense which had as many strikeouts as baserunners on the day.  Even worse, from a prospect POV, five of the team's eight baserunners were provided by long time system vets Myles Schorder and Eliezer Zambrano, and from a production POV, a sixth baserunner was immediately wiped off the bases when Carbonell was picked off 1st. Mac Williamson did halt his recent slide with two singles in four PA.

On the mound, the game was lost with Joan Gregorio on the mound. Biagini held the game scoreless into the 7th but allowed a walk and a hit to the first two batters and Gregorio was brought on in relief. Though he didn't give up any hard contact, he wasn't able to prevent either inherited runner from scoring (on a Sac Fly and an infield hit). And then in the 8th inning he gave up two more runs of his own when he surrendered a leadoff HR to Roman Quinn (#7 prospect in Phillies system) and walked a batter who would come around to score on the Phil McCormick and Tyler Mizenko's watch. The five runs was well more than enough to send Richmond down to another defeat.

With San Jose and Augusta off so this seems like a good time to get a full snapshot of how everybody on the team has been doing thus far.  This data all comes straight from minorleaguecentral.com

Full slate tonight which features two of the last three 1st round picks as Chris Stratton and Tyler Beede take the hill. The Richmond game is an all 1st rounder affair as Stratton goes up against Phils Aaron Nola. Jose Reyes goes for Augusta, and Sacramento is once again in TBD mode.
