SF Giants Minor Lines, April 26

Streaks will be broken! and not broken

Just over a year ago this was Andrew Cain, following a very serious form of colitis, several surgeries, a loss of some 75 lbs, and a new colon:

Yesterday, this was Andrew Cain crushing fastballs. And that's pretty freaking fantastic!

With 3 wins and 2 losses the organization enjoyed only it's second winning day since April 10. Two of the affiliates (Sacramento, Augusta) are now at .500. Progress! Let's celebrate with the most exciting play in baseball!

HIGHLIGHTS: Jarrett Parker went 4 for 4 with 2 HRs. Andrew Cain reached base 3 times including a double and HR.

Sacramento defeated Tacoma (Mariners), 6-2

On a gorgeous day for baseball the River Cats broke their 6 game losing streak and returned to .500 at 9-9, driven by a huge day from Jarrett Parker. Probably the best hitting line of the young season in the system. Parker singled to lead off a 2 run rally in the 2nd, hit a 3 run HR in the 3rd, came back with the inside the park HR in the 6th and finally hit a line drive single in the 8th that was hit just a little too hard to score Duvall from 2nd for his 5th RBI. And all in all, Jarrett got the home town fans up their feet and jazzed. See. Photographic evidence!

Ty Blach pitched in with 6 quality innings, the best effort from a starting pitcher in over a week. As usual, Blach was pitching to contact and while Tacoma's lineup isn't the scariest in the PCL it did include lefty killer Carlos Quentin who went 0 for 4 on the day, as well as the Mariners #3 prospect (BA), 21 year old SS Ketel Marte.

Richmond continues to suffer through a nightmare opening to the season, dropping it's 9th consecutive game to fall to 3-11.  The Squirrels did manage to score six runs in this game, making remarkably efficient use of 6 hits, 4BBs, a HBP, picking up single runs in four of the first five innings. However, on the other side of the ball two errors in the 6th inning (one by relief pitcher Pedro Rodriguez) opened the door to a crucial three run rally which gave New Britain the lead, and then in the 9th Josh Osich gave up a two run HR to SS Trevor Story that proved to be the decisive runs. Story, the former 1st round pick was a favorite of Fla-Giant's back on draft day. He's had an up and down career. Currently the #12 prospect in the Rockies system, he's still a SS with power.

San Jose put all their production at the top of the order, as the first five hitters in the lineup all reached based multiple times. In all the 1-5 hitters produced 13 baserunners and 9 hits, including Ryder's 2b and Horan's HR. Horan, who has only nine hits so far on the year has made them count with 3 HRs and 3 2bs. He also quadrupled his season BB total with his three walks. RafRod's been Horan's counterpart on the season as he has 22 hits in 58 ABs, but is also sporting a rather punchless .087 Iso.

Nick Vander Tuig, former college World Series hero, has been efficient in his two starts. His stuff is a little short but his feel for pitching appears to be enough to find success with this level of hitters at least. Of course, that was true of Matt Lujan last year as well. College guys with good feel can have success in the lower leagues, but whether that success is sustainable higher up is always in question.

Tough first game on both sides of the ball for Augusta. Their offense managed just 3 hits and 4 baserunners in the 7 inning game.  They opened the game loudly with a leadoff double from Fargas and a 3b from Sy, but that was ultimately pretty much the entire offensive output for this game, as Ewing's single and a walk to Travious Relaford would be the only baserunners they'd have over the next 21 outs. On the mound, Sam Coonrod, the 22 yr old 5th rounder from last year's draft had a pretty forgettable day. Eleven of the 21 batters he faced reached base. Nor did he appear to miss many bats in this outing. Fight again another day, Sam.

Game 2 was almost the reverse of the opener as the Greenjackets were consistently applying offensive pressure. They scored in four of the seven innings, with the big blow being a five run 3rd. The lineup produced 13 baserunners and 5 XBH in 7 innings of play. Fargas and Relaford at the top of the order set the tone, reaching base 5 times between them with 2 doubles.  But the star of the game was Cain who missed all of 2014 as he rehabbed from his medical ordeal and worked his way back into playing shape. The 25 year old out of UNC Wilmington was a 24th round pick in 2012.

On the mound Nick Gonzalez and two relievers completed stifled the Rome offense, with 2014 1st round pick Braxton Davidson's solo HR being the only score.

Augusta has to be pretty pleased with what it's accomplished so far in the season. They've opened up with a tough stretch of 18 games that included 12 games vs two of the best propsect rosters in the minors in Greenville and Rome, and thanks to rain outs/rescheduling they only played 5 of those 18 games at home.  Coming out of that opening with a 9-9 record isn't bad at all. And there's reason to believe that if they can fix some of the issues they've had with the bullpen that this offense will score enough runs to be competitive in the Sally. After an off day tomorrow they'll begin a week at home starting with a series against the Lakewood Blue Claws and one of the hotter prospects in baseball, the Phillies Carlos Tocci.

Light schedule today as both Augusta and San Jose travel home. Sacramento continues their series vs. Tacoma and faces old friend and teammate Mike Kickham. Sac's starter is currently listed as TBA. In Richmond, the Reading Phils come to town as Joe Biagini will go up against Ben Lively. Lively the former Reds prospect had a tremendous year in the Cal league before being traded to Philadelphia for Marlon Byrd. He's a solid back-end rotation type prospect who features a lot of deception in his delivery. A tough test for the struggling Richmond hitters.
