SF Giants Minor Lines, April 22

In which Sacramento and San Jose go through some sort of Freaky Friday personality exchange, while Richmond sits in a corner and thinks about what it's done.

Ryan Lollis is not the kind of player anybody comes to Minor Lines to see. The 28 year old minor league vet has experience in both AA and AAA. He can play all three OF positions and play them well. He's been a starter and he's been a bench guy. And he's heading down the organizational ladder at this point instead of up, which is never a good sign for a guy's hopes of a big league career. But he's been a very good organizational soldier filling in wherever needed and playing with energy and commitment, and that's definitely highlight worthy.

HIGHLIGHTS: Will Callaway falls out of DL hitting, 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. Chase Johnson threw 6 scoreless innings.

FIGHT AGAIN ANOTHER DAY: Jake Dunning allowed 11 ER. Ouch! Forget it Jake, it's PCL.

There was also lots of player movement yesterday. Ehire Adrianza was put on the 7 day DL; Skyler Stromsmoe off the AA DL and up to AAA to take his place. Pitcher Tyler Mizenko heads to AA Richmond. In A ball, a chain of transactions: Austin Slater moved to the 7 Day DL with an ankle sprain, Hunter Cole promoted from Augusta to SJ, and Will Callaway assigned to Augusta from the DL. Pitcher Dusten Knight was also assigned to Augusta.

Sacramento lost at El Paso (Padres) 13-5

Though this game got out of hand quite early, the RiverCats bats mostly stayed silent against Chihuahua starter James Needy (a 6th round pick in 2009) even through all the garbage time. They collected only 8 hits on the night, all of them singles, and had only 12 baserunners in total. For Adam Duvall, who is batting a cool .414, it was only the second game all year in which he has failed to record a hit. He did reach base via the walk however. He has reached base safely in all but one game this year (the 2nd of the season).

In his first inning of work last night Jake Dunning walked a batter, threw a Wild Pitch, made an error on an errant pickoff throw, gave up a hit,  and a hit a batter. This as it turned out would be his best inning of work on the night. In the second inning he hit the first two batters he faced, setting up a three run HR. And in the third all kinds of things  happened to Jake. There was a strikeout on which no out was recorded. There was a Sac bunt on which no out was recorded. And then there were a mess of hits as El Paso nearly recorded a cycle in the inning. In all Dunning absorbed 11 Runs, only 6 of which were earned though given that he made half the team's errors himself that probably isn't much consolation.  In their last three games, all losses, Sacramento's SP have allowed 26 runs over 11.1 innings. The bullpen and offense remain strengths of the team, but the pitching staff's lack of experienced starting pitchers may prove to be the RiverCats chief flaw and I find myself wondering when Kevin Correia will take his spot in the rotation. Despite the three game losing streak, they still find themselves in a tie for first place at 8-6.

Though the El Paso team has a couple of pretty good prospects, on this day they ran out a classic AAA lineup featuring ex-big leaguers all over the field: Abraham Almonte, Jake Goebbert, Brett Wallace, Cody Decker, Mike McCoy, Jason Lane, Scott Elbert... much like the Sacramento team the roster is filled with the guys who've been there and just can't quite stick for one reason or another. Life one level down from the third deck.

Richmond had their second day off of the season, heading home to face New Britain

San Jose defeated Inland Empire (Angels), 7-0

completing 3 game sweep in which they outscored IE 16-1. SJ's record now stands at 6-8.

The San Jose offense had 15 baserunners and 14 hits, including 3 doubles. Their effort was greatly aided by four Inland Empire errors as well as two WP. Five different starters had two hits. On the down side they continued their free swinging ways with 8Ks vs. 1 BB on the day. One thing that has been quite noticeable in the Giants 3 game sweep following their previous troubles, is that the defense played much cleaner baseball in this series. Exchanging Arroyo and Slater for Bednar and Polonius is certainly an offensive downgrade, but it must be admitted it's also something of a defensive upgrade. Hunter Cole arrived at Muni and entered the game as a PH and immediately doubled on his first pitch in the Cal league. He's had a good start to the year.

The Giants pitching completely dominated this series vs. Inland Empire, as they allowed only 1 run over the three games. Like Beede the day before, Chase Johnson pounded the strike zone, throwing 48 of 72 pitches for strikes. The results didn't show up in Ks but hard contact was definitely lacking. Jeff Soptic battled control but managed to escape a difficult and very long (35 pitches) inning.

Good pitching and solid defense and the team goes from losing 7 of 8 to winning their first series of the year and completing a three game sweep. And speaking of Beede, get to know him a little better with his pre-game interview with Joe Ritzo yesterday following his fine outing:

Will Callaway was the story today. In his first game off the DL (replacing Hunter Cole) he got doubles in his first two PA and finished the day with 3 hits. Callaway is a 25 year old selected in the 37th round of the 2013 draft. Fargas continued his excellent early season hitting, though he has now been caught attempting to steal in 3 consecutive tries, after 9 consecutive successful attempts. The 20 year old, an 11th rd draft choice in the 2013 draft is now sporting a .358/.404/.434 line two weeks into the season. Jeremy Sy, the 25 year old 2012 draftee (12th round) continues to hit for power and strike out a lot in his repeat of the Sally league. LF Cristian Paulino is a 23 year old in his 6th season in pro ball, though until last year he'd never made it out of short season/rookie leagues.  To the field correspondent for game notes!

He's not the hardest working man in Minor Lines for nothing!

Full scouting report for the game:

All four teams are back in play today as Richmond comes homes and San Jose and Augusta set out on the road. Interestingly, Richmond is the only team that has had a scheduled day off so far in the year, and they've had two. The other three all were scheduled to begin their years with nearly three straight weeks of games, 18 for SJ and Augusta, and 20 for Sacramento. Of course, weather has given the Greenjackets days off. Today Augusta heads to Rome and San Jose heads to Bakersfield to begin the final series of their tough opening schedules before reaching their first scheduled days of rest.

Scheduled starters are Austen Fleet, Jack Snodgrass, Keury Mella, and Matthew Gage.
