Jake Peavy sent to DL; Andrew Susac called up

Three catchers? Three catchers.

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

After his last, miserable outing, Jake Peavy suggested his back was acting up again. Knocking over vases, banging on windows, you know. Acting up. He did his best to downplay it, but on Saturday the Giants placed him on the DL and recalled Andrew Susac.

This could mean Ryan Vogelsong could take over until Matt Cain is healthy, or it could mean that Cain is progressing well enough to be in consideration for Peavy's next start. The only thing we know for certain is that Yusmeiro Petit will never ever ever ever start again.

(We don't know that, really.)

(Only kind of.)

Peavy looked dreadful throughout much of spring training, and despite starting each of his two outings with a run of scoreless innings, he's currently 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA. Presumably, Andrew Susac will start to get the pinch-hitting appearances that had been going to Hector Sanchez.

The Giants will turn to their ace, Chris Heston, on Saturday in the hopes that he can reverse this disturbing torrent of bad news.

Update: No surgery. Just rest.
