MOAR INNINGS they all cried. And the band said, "Play on!"

I'm just spitballing here, but I'm thinking that if I were an A ball player, and I were facing a recent Boston Red Sox World Series closer hero, I'd think it would be really cool to ding a double off the Green Monster.  But that's just me. I'm sure to Hunter Cole it was just another day at the office:

HIGHLIGHTS: Keury Mella K'd 7 in 4 innings in Cal league debut. Adam Duvall reached base 5 times and Jarrett Parker hit a walk off grand slam. To the games:

Sacramento defeated Salt Lake City (Angels), 6-5 in 18 innings

Probably everything you need to know about this game can be summed up in Brett Bochy's pitching line, but we have much much more! Let's head to the field correspondents!

First the bad news:

Susac took a foul ball off his hand and was taken for Xrays. We'll stay tuned on this one for sure.

And now a few scouting reports from Doug and Kristin.

After effective outings by both teams starters, Ty Blach and Nick Tropeano this game devolved into a war of attrition until the 18th inning when suddenly 7 runs were scored. Three for the Bees on a three run homer, before Jarrett Parker sent whatever fans were still there (AHEM field reporters!), home happy with a walk off Grand Slam!  And finally, one more thought from Kristin:

That's because YOU were at the wrong game!

Kyle Crick began his return to AA with a four pitch walk and a visit from the Pitching Coach. Literally. The pitching coach came out to talk to him before pitching to his second batter. From there he delivered the kind of start that has become somewhat sadly familiar. Lots of balls, lots of swings and misses, not that many hits. He hit his pitch count in the 4th inning and left after that inning at 86 pitches, 44 strikes.

Ty Rogers had a tough outing, blowing the lead that to led all the free baseball, but after the two teams scored 8 runs in the 6th and 7th, once again zeros dominated.  Richmond only had 16 K's in the game, but given the 4 extra innings they probably would have challenged Sacramento's club record of 20.  The game ended in the 14th when backup infielder Rando Moreno came on to pitch for the Squirrels and Bowie scratched out a run.

The Richmond lineup has been slow to get started on the season, none more so than leadoff hitter Daniel Carbonell. Fresh off a strong spring camp performance, he's now gotten off to a 2 for 17 start with 6 Ks and 0 BBs. Do better Dan!

San Jose defeated Lancaster (Astros) 8-3 in a more conventional 9 inning game

The Giants got off to a strong start in the first inning when Tyler Horan followed up a Jesus Galindo lead off double and an error with a 3 run HR.  From there a nice barrage of offense up and down the lineup (13 hits in all) and strong pitching assured the win.  Keury Mella made a fine Cal league debut, going 4 innings with 0 BB and 7 Ks. He did however, end the staff SP streak of not allowing a run all season. So way to go on blowing THAT Keury!

Greenjacket hitters got 7 more XBH today, but all were doubles and they didn't sequence them quite as well in this game.  EJ Encinosa part of the reliever draft of 2012 hasn't managed to move at the pace of his fellow classmates, not even legendary slow starter Ray Black, and he had a rough outing here in his debut.

Arenado followed up his big night by lacing singles up the middle in his first two PA. And John Riley continues to mix strikeouts and XBH in his PA. The huge night tonight came from 2b Hunter Cole, who peppered the walls with his three doubles. The 26th rounder was an intriguing late round value pick last year as perhaps we can see from this pre-draft scouting report from BA:

Cole has not developed as scouts hoped and some of his tools have backed up despite his steady offensive production for three years at Georgia. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder is a good all-around athlete with solid tools and a strong, toned build.

Final thought: though there's been some good offensive production in the system thus far, some of the teams are putting up ugly peripherals.
